the next ski-masked attacker who crawls into your bathroom.â
âLook at it my way. I havenât seen you in years. The next thing I know, my bathroom is filled with strange men.â
âStrange men? â
âI consider you very strange.â
âMaybe youâd better consider me dangerous, instead,â he warned her suddenly, softly, a thoughtful look in his eyes as he studied her.
âMaybe I should,â she murmured, agreeing. âDamn it! I just want to know exactly what youâre doing here.â
âAll right. Fine. Tell me, do you know exactly who all your guests are?â
âYou know how the island is run. My father is gone, so yes, of course, I meet all my guests.â
âI didnât ask you that. I asked if you knew who they were.â
âIâm not a cop. People donât have to fill out their life histories on arrival. I donât have dossiers on everyone who sets foot on Seafire Isle.â
âI didnât think so.â
He sounded so damned self-satisfied.
âYou do, of course? Have dossiers on my guests?â
âYes.â
âYouâre kidding.â
âWell, I donât exactly have dossiers. But I imagine I know a great deal more about them than you do.â
âAll right, whoâs on my island?â
âYou really have no idea?â
âI really have no idea.â
He stared at her, then smiled suddenly, cocking his head. He turned away from her, heading toward the door.
âWhere are you going?â
âOut.â
âOut?â
He paused, looking back. âYou wanted me out, right?â
âDamn it! That was beforeââ
âIâll see you at cocktail hour, Sam.â
âDamn you, you didnât answer my question!â
âI didnât, did I? But then you havenât been particularly cooperative either, have you?â
âCooperative! Are you insane?â
âSee you later, Sam. Maybe we can exchange some information then. Go in and close that window in your bedroom. Unless you want to take the chance of having a few more strange men enter.â
âDamn you, Adam!â
âSam, pay attention. Make sure you close and lock that window. And when you leave your cottage from now on, make damned sure that you lock it carefully. You need an alarm system, actually.â
âThis is an island! Weâve never needed any kind of alarm system!â
âMaybe you never did before.â
âAdam, this is ridiculous! What weâve had has always been sufficient. Normal hotels donât have alarm systems in every room.â
He arched a brow. âYeah, well, a lot of your big guys have some kind of video surveillance. Thatâs beside the point now. You should think about moving into the main house for a while, maybe. For your own protection. Yancy lives in the main house, right? And Jacques?â
âI donât want to move into the main house. Iâm quite comfortable where I amââ
âWith strange men in your bathroom?â
âDamn you, Adam, you have no right to do this! Talk to me, tell meââ
âSamââ
âYou know, Adam, thatâs the basic problem with you. You always want something for nothing. You donât seem to have the concept of give and take down yet.â
âSam, so far, you havenât given me a damn thing.â
âSon of a bitch! I always gave you everything.â
âWrong, Sam. You never gave me a chance to give you anything beforeââ
âWhat?â
âYou never gave me a chance to give you anythingââ
âLike what?â
âLike explanations! So this time, youâre just going to have to ask and ask damned politely when you want something. I didnât give, is that it? I went through one hell of a wringer.â
âAdamââ
âYou took a hell of a lot more than you ever seemed to know, Miss
