coast of Florida.â
âI read an article about him in one of the diving magazines. He turns his finds over to the government, endows all sorts of museumsââ
âAnd he keeps what he wants in his private collection, or sells it on the black market around the world.â
She wasnât going to argue with him when she didnât really know anything about Astinâexcept that he appeared to be a model citizen.
âAstin was friends with your father.â
âHow do you know?â
âThey went diving together once when I was here. I didnât know who Astin was myself at the time, but Iâve had the opportunity to meet him since.â
Sam shook her head stubbornly. âI never met him. My father had his own life, and when he was alive, I didnât necessarily meet and greet all the guests. So this Astin knew my father. Lots of people did. And itâs not illegal for Astin or his people to be visiting the island.â
âI didnât say it was illegal. Just curious.â
âBesides, youâre not a cop anymore.â
âNo.â
âSo what is it to you?â she asked coolly.
âI told you, Iâm working for private concerns.â
âAnd what do I know about your âprivate concernsâ? I still think youâre at the center of all the trouble.â
âHe was trying to drug you, not me.â
âI give up. Youâre trouble, and youâre impossible.â
âWant to try throwing me off the island?â he asked pleasantly.
âCause enough trouble, and I will.â
âThis is a public vacation spot. I could sue the pants off you.â
âI could have you arrested for breaking and entering.â
âThatâs what I get for trying to save your ass!â he exclaimed, hands on his hips. âTell me, Sam, are you going to throw me off again?â
âI never threw you off the island.â
âYou asked me to leave.â
âYour interests were elsewhere.â
âSo, are you?â
âLike you just said, Seafire Isle is a public vacation spot.â
âIâm glad you see it that way. Because I donât give a damn what you think, or what you wantâI wonât be leaving until a few mysteries are cleared up.â
âIs that so?â she inquired politely.
âAnd you should be glad.â
âReally.â
âYesâdamned grateful, in fact.â
âThen thank God for your presence,â Sam muttered.
âSam, my love, you can be one stubborn bitch,â he said wryly. He took the few steps needed to come close to her, lifting her chin. She managed to keep herself from wrenching it away.
âYou bet!â she promised him softly. âThe worst bitch youâve ever come across if youâre trying to put something over on me.â
He smiled suddenly. âArenât we getting just a little bit carried away here? I didnât come to pick up the pieces of an old argument right where we left off. And I probably did save your life.â
âOkay. Thank you for saving my life. Now, will you please get the hell out of my house? Maybe I canât throw you off the island, but I know damned well I have the right to throw you out of here!â
âMiss Carlyle, you need me.â
âI do?â
He shrugged. âWell, if you do decide to try to throw me off the island, youâll have to hope someone else is around the next time youâre in trouble.â
âI thanked you, didnât I? Of course, it would have been helpful to know just who was attacking me, but then, youâre not a cop anymore. You couldnât possibly have been expected to nab the attacker as well as save my life.â
âOkay, the next time youâre about to fracture your skull, Iâll consider you expendable in the pursuit of justice.â
âWill you please get the hell out?â
âNice. I should just leave you to
