moist lips, leaving her skin very heated where he touched. "I’m having a very difficult time staying away from you."
"Not that I noticed." She tried to step away from him. "Ethan, you said you wanted to see me in the dress. Well?"
Reluctantly he backed from her, allowing her to turn. The approval was in his eyes. "That will do for later. Have you anything more comfortable you would rather wear right now?"
"That would depend on what you have in mind." Her head lowered, her eyes focusing on the buttons on his shirt, as she thought about what he might think she was suggesting. "I mean..." She really didn’t know what she meant. Looking at her watch, mostly for distraction, she noted the time. "Won’t your guests wonder where you are?"
Walking out of the small room, he answered. "No. My guests know to expect me when they see me, if they want anything of me, that is. They are all capable of taking care of themselves."
"As long as one of us is at their beck and call." She said hotly. "I don’t understand you people. Why you need servants, when you have everything we do. The difference is that you refuse to use your own." She was at the dresser drawers, looking for a pair of shorts and a top.
He was behind her again, taking her arms, feeling her muscles tense. "I think I like you better right here."
"Look, Mr. Ayers. I took this job because I didn’t have anything on my books for more than three weeks, and it just happened to fall into your cruise time. I don’t need the money from this job, I’m doing fine for myself. I have everything I need, and I thank God I had enough insight not to fall into my sister’s footsteps." She didn’t know what had gotten into her. The lack of sleep mixed with the ups and downs of her emotions around this playboy. She could blame it all on the latter, alone.
He had stepped back at her words, sitting on the bed beside her guitar. "Tell me what is really wrong, Jenà. I’ve obviously sparked something off in you."
Turning, her face red with embarrassment from her attack on him brought, she spoke in a nicer tone. "I’m sorry. It’s just with no sleep all night, and the pushing I get from you, I can’t handle it. You toy with me, tease me." Tears sprang up in her eyes unexpectedly, as her voice took on the squeak that would tell him she was too upset to continue. She turned around quickly, hoping he hadn’t seen them.
But he had seen them, fast as she had turned when they began, they were there for his notice. "I should be the one to apologize." He stayed where he was, knowing if he were to take her in his arms, it would only make things worse for her. "I think you could do with a long rest. If you would like, I’ll have your roommate gather your things for you later."
"No." She turned to him, wiping her face. "If you will leave, I’ll be more comfortable right here." Tossing her clothes back in the open drawer, she looked at him. "If you wouldn’t mind helping me out of this dress..."
He was up and behind her, carefully unzipping the back. "You change, I’ll be right outside waiting for you. I’ll escort you up to your suite. I think I could stand finding the sleep I missed last night, also."
Turning toward him again, she studied his eyes that he now allowed the tired to show from. "I hope I didn’t wake you this morning with my singing. I do tend to get too loud, and it was awful early."
"No. I was awake. In fact, I was watching you, listening to every note from the beginning." Putting his hands on her shoulders, he kissed her forehead. "Now, get dressed and come with me."
Again she spoke her feelings. "I’d rather stay here, if you don’t mind." She turned from him again, feeling his hands pushing the dress from her shoulders. "Are you threatening me again, Mr. Ayers?"
"No threat, just a promise." His hands were on her bare shoulders, burning into them. "Do you need help? I carried you downstairs the other night. Going upstairs would be no more of a problem." His smile was in
