Lucas said. âIf a dealer killed her, or she was killed because of dope, everybody understands. Itâs a one-time thing and sheâs partially at fault. If she hadnât been using dope, sheâd still be alive. But if itâs a cat burglar, then weâve got a serial killer on the loose, and the worst kind of serial killerâthe kind whoâll come creeping into your bedroom and strangle you, even with other people in the house.â
âLike one of those horror movies. Halloween , or the one with the guy with the fingers that are knives,â Rose Marie said.
âNo, no, no, we donât want that,â the mayor said, waving off the idea.
âThatâs what we thought,â Rose Marie said wryly.
âSo itâs dope,â the mayor said. âWhoâs running the show?â
âFrank Lester,â said Rose Marie. âLucas and his group will fit in sideways, like we did before. Everybodyâs comfortable with that.â
âGood. Itâs Strategic Planning--â
âStrategic Studies and Planning,â Lucas said. âAnd I need a woman in the group. Marcy Sherrill wants to come over from Homicide.â
Rose Marie shook her head. âThen I got to give Homicide somebody else. Everything is too tight.â
âWeâre paying for ourselves about twenty times over,â Lucas said patiently. âAnd I need a woman if Iâm going to operate.â
âThereâs politics. . . .â
âMurder is down fourteen percent, and a lot of itâs because of my guysâthree guys, including meâspotting the assholes,â Lucas said. âThatâs politics.â
The mayor held up his hands to stop the argument. To Rose Marie he said, âHalf the people in Homicide are going to be working on this anyway, so why donât you give him Marcy for the duration of the Maison case? When thatâs done, weâll figure something out.â
Rose Marie sighed and said, âAll right. But I want some more money.â
The mayor rolled his eyes, then said, âYeah, who doesnât?â Then: âYouâll do the media?â
Rose Marie nodded. âBut youâll have to be there, too, the first time. This is gonna be large, media-wise.â
âWho do you thinkâll come in?â
âEverybody,â she said. âFour locals and a freelancer for CNN are already outside the house. All the other networks are on the way. And most of the picture-and-gossip magazines. People. The Star. â
âThen weâre gonna need something more than just saying itâs a âdope-related killing.ââ He looked at Lucas. âDo we have somebody we can throw to them? Some doper asshole they can chase for a couple of days?â
âI can ask,â Lucas said.
âDo that. The more theyâve got to occupy them, the less time theyâre gonna spend asking why nothingâs been done yet.â The mayor touched his forehead. âWish Iâd gotten the new hair, though, you know? Like last year.â
Rose Marie stretched the skin back from her nose. âNever too late,â she said.
Â
Â
THE MEETING LASTED fifteen minutes. As Lucas was leaving, Rose Marie said, âHeyâturn on your cell phone, okay? For the duration.â
Lucas shrugged noncommittally. On the way back to his office, he poked Delâs number on his phoneâs speed-dial. Del was in the middle of the Internal Affairs interview, and when Lucas passed on the mayorâs request, he said, âIâll see what we got, as soon as I get out of here.â
âHowâs it going?â
âFine. Theyâre a lovely bunch of people.â
Lucas punched off, dropped the phone back in his coat pocket. Del could take care of himself. At his office, he yawned, peeled off his jacket, and locked himself in, leaving the lights off. He pulled open a desk drawer, dropped into his chair, and put
