they listened to the tape uninterrupted. Gemma was surprised at how clear it was. It sounded as if the boys were actually in the room with them.
It lasted nearly an hour and Gemma reheated and dished up last nightâs leftover lasagne to eat while they listened. At one point in the tape she felt like she was in a scene from Cagney and Lacey . But that was just a TV show. This was real lifeâ¦so much more exciting.
The tape ended just as Gemma finished off her glass of wine. âBe a good boy and grab the bottle for me,â she said to Max.
âWhere were you hiding when you taped this?â Murray looked on the verge of throwing up. Clearly he wasnât enjoying this as much as she was.
âWe were under the shed.â Max placed the half full wine bottle at Gemmaâs fingertips.
Murrayâs eyebrows nearly thumped together. âYou actually saw these people?â
âYeah, itâs really cool under there. Itâs dark, so we can see them but they canât see us. There was this one guy though that scared the crap out of us when he fell up the stairs. He was like this far away.â Trent held his fingers centimetres apart.
âYou should see it, Dad.â It was Maxâs turn to speak. âWeâve made this really cool racing track. We race our remote control cars.â
Gemma nearly burst out laughing as she imagined the boys playing with their cars while these guys were planning a robbery upstairs. She wanted to see it, but by the look on Murrayâs face, he was a long way from matching her thoughts.
âWe told you it was true,â Trent said. He raised his chin in defiance and Gemma saw for the first timeâor maybe it was the first time she was willing to admit itâhow grown-up Trent was.
âIâm sorry, boys, I should have believed you. Itâs just this whole thing, itâs like something from television.â
Gemma grinned. âHa, like Cagney & Lacey.â She loved that show.
Murray glared at her.
âWhat?â She shrugged.
He shook his head. âBoys, itâs past your bedtime.â
âBut what about the tape, Dad?â
âGemma and I need to discuss it. Weâll talk about it more in the morning. Now get ready for bed and Iâll come up in a minute.â
The brothers werenât happy with going, but they did anyway. Gemma topped up her wine glass and upon noticing Murray hadnât even touched his, added a little more.
Murray waited until he heard the boys upstairs before he spoke. âWeâll have to give the tape to the police.â
âI guess so. I could take it to the station tomorrow.â
His eyes shifted from the boom box to her. âYou sure you can get away from work?â
âIâll cancel an appointment and shut the door for a bit. Itâll be fun.â
He reached over and cupped her hand. âThank you. You know I canât take time off at the moment.â Murray was always going on about needing to earn as much money as he could just to get the bills paid.
âI know. Itâs okay.â She sipped on the wine. âSoâ¦how much money do you think will be in the bank?â
âNo idea. They must bring in extra cash for Melbourne Cup day.â
âExactly, so how much do you think itâll be? I reckon at least three million dollars, donât you?â
âI doubt it. Thatâs too high,â he said.
Gemma took another swig of wine and thought about the zeroes as she twirled her hair between her fingers. âIf there are six bank robbers and thereâs only, say, one million dollars, then theyâd only get about one hundred and fifty grand each. It doesnât seem worth it for that much money.â
âHoney, theyâre bank robbers, not accountants. They probably havenât even thought it through.â
âWell, it has to be at least two million dollars. Wouldnât make sense
