a bite at the bar,â she said.
âThen you should know that Tirov appears to be in the same restaurant.â
âOh, my God! How did you know?â
âI neglected to tell you that Bob Cantorâs app had tracked him to London. My advice is just to pay your check and sneak out, so as to avoid a confrontation.â
âI certainly will. Goodbye.â
Stone watched as the yellow dot left the location and moved down to Burlington Arcade, while the green dot remained. Relieved, he closed his phone.
Geoffrey came into the room. âDame Felicity is on the phone for you, Mr. Barrington. Line one.â
âThank you, Geoffrey. Any trouble getting her boat started this morning?â
âNone whatever, sir. I think it must have been flooded.â
Stone picked up the phone. âGood morning again.â
âAnd good morning to you.â
âNo trouble getting your boat started this morning?â
âNone. I expect the engine was flooded. Did we surprise you last night?â
âYes, but very pleasantly. I canât think when Iâve enjoyed being surprised so much.â
âYou certainly rose to the occasion, and you acquitted yourself very nicely.â
âI had a lot of inspiration.â
âPerhaps weâll do it again sometime.â
âI wouldnât be surprised.â
âSheâs a lovely girl. I can see why youâre so attracted to her.â
âShe said much the same about you.â
âIâm so glad. Oh, has your post arrived yet?â
âNot yet.â
âWhen it does, you may expect to receive some interesting news.â
âIs that meant to be a surprise, too?â
âIt is.â
At that moment, Geoffrey entered with some letters on a silver tray.
âAh, hereâs the post now. Which one is the surprise?â
âThe one posted from the Isle of Wight.â
Stone found the postmark and opened the letter. It was from the secretary of the famous old yacht club across the Solent, informing him that he had been elected to membership. âGood God!â he said. âHow did this happen?â
âSecretly,â she said. âYou made a very good impression at the club, and if youâll remember, you had several flag officers as guests at your dinner party last year.â
âYes, I remember.â
âIt was not difficult to gather the requisite number of proposers for your application, all of them prominent in the club. Those things canât be rushed, but nearly a year has passed, and the wheels ground steadily in your absence.â
âI canât thank you enough, Felicity,â he said earnestly. âItâs a wonderful club, and I shall enjoy using it.â
âLet me give you a phone number,â she said.
He wrote it down.
âThatâs the club tailor, in Southampton. Ring him and heâll come over and measure you for a reefer suit and a mess kit, and heâll sell you a cap, as well. Youâll need both.â
âI shall certainly do so.â
âYouâll also need a stickpin for your necktie. Thatâs part of the regalia. Benzieâs, the jewelry store on the Parade in Cowes, will provide that.â
âIâll stop in on my next trip over.â
âI canât wait to see your new boat.â
âIâll ring you as soon as I get my hands on it.â
âGoodbye then, and congratulations.â
âThank you.â
âAnd
au revoir
.â
âIndeed.â He hung up, called the tailor to make an appointment.
âYouâre at Windward Hall, on the Beaulieu, is that right, Mr. Barrington?â
âThatâs correct.â
âI have another call to make near you today. I could visit you at, say, four?â
âPerfect.â
âAnd may I ask, sir, what size hat do you wear?â
âSeven and a half.â
âIâll bring a couple.â
âGood. See you
