face went white. She looked at him with a blank expression. "Hi Eli…or should I call you Ethan?"
He opened his mouth to speak, but couldn’t come up with anything.
Glaring at him, she loudly said, "You really thought this disguise would work? You thought I’d never come back here and recognize you?"
He glanced around and found several students and other employees staring at them. Rushing from behind the desk, he leaned in close to her and whispered, "Can we—"
She interrupted, not attempting to keep her voice down at all. "Wait, you must think you’re Clark Kent…just remove your glasses and no one will know it’s you…Ethan!"
Looking at her apologetically, he pleaded softly, "Victoria, can we talk about this later?"
"No, we can’t."
He glanced around the room to see people still staring at them. After motioning to her with his head, he rushed toward the steps. She narrowed her eyes and didn’t move, watching him incredulously. He turned and saw that she was not following him, so he waved her over impatiently. After rolling her eyes, she headed toward him and he began climbing the steps.
Victoria followed Ethan down a long hallway on the second floor of the building. He walked to the end of the hall, opened a door to a small room containing stacks of books and went through the door. She watched from outside the room as he headed to the window. He stood, looking out to the courtyard and facing away from her. After letting out a long sigh, she followed him in and closed the door. He turned toward her slowly preparing for the worst. "Victoria, my name is Ethan. I can explain, I, uh…"
"And you’re a senior. You little shit. I can’t believe— and who’s Eli? I saw your ID and it looked just like you."
"My brother." He placed his hand on her forearm and gave her a sad look.
Pulling her arm away, she shot back, "Do you always go around impersonating your brother?"
"No, I did only so I could meet you. I knew what type of guy you were looking for so—"
"And that’s why you cut your hair?"
He nodded and looked at her desperately. "I saw you a few weeks ago and I followed you. I listened while you interviewed those freshmen. I knew what you needed to hear to invite them home and…I’d do it again. I would." She just glared at him as he continued, "I watched from outside your fence as you…I watched what you did to them. I wanted to be them. I had to feel your lips on me."
"You spied on me. You’re a—"
"I’ve got to know," he interrupted. "Why are you doing this with all these guys? Why?"
"Why do you care?"
"You're gorgeous. I want to know everything about you."
After looking away from him, she paused, then returned to his hopeful sad face. "Oh shit," she said before closing her eyes and exhaling deeply. When she opened them, her anger melted away a little and she began, "In a weird way I’m trying to honor David. He told me this story about a woman who gave him confidence when he desperately needed it by reaching out to him sexually. He wanted me to go on with my life. I couldn’t, but I found that this…this was something I could do."
She looked at him now, not angry at all, but instead just desperate for someone to understand her. Appearing to be almost on the verge of tears, he said, "I want to be with you. Let me."
"But everything about you is a lie!"
"I had to meet you. I wanted to be who you were looking for. I couldn’t stop thinking about you since I first saw you. And once I spoke to you, I knew I needed to have you."
She turned away from him, and he put a hand on her shoulder. She didn’t pull away and a tear fell from her eye. As Ethan touched her, they felt the connection— they felt that something powerful was still between them. Her pulse quickened, Ethan could barely breathe. They sensed that familiar heat boiling up inside them. Leaning close to her neck, he whispered, "I think this is why David gave you that gift. He wanted you to find me. This was no
