brother.â
Rachel shook her head at her husband. âDidnât I just say that?â
Quentin nodded. âYou know your man is a little slow.â
Dwayne tossed a look around the table, his eyebrows raised. âSo that would make Nasser Salman, whoâs campaigning against Troy for mayor, your father?â
Amina nodded. âYes, he is.â
âAmina is her fatherâs campaign manager,â Harper added.
âPlease donât hold that against me,â Amina said, making them all laugh. âSo how do you know my family?â she asked, looking from Dwayne to Rachel and back.
âYour brother and I did some business together a while back,â Dwayne answered. âRachel was the attorney on the deal.â
âWhat business was that?â Amina questioned. She eyed him curiously.
âI own a large food-services company and your brother brokered the sale of a small business I acquired.â
In the back of her mind Amina recalled her fatherâs excitement over Basilâs accomplishment. âYou own Home Grown Foods?â
Dwayne smiled. âI do and at the time we were looking to expand into the halal market. Your brother was instrumental in helping us acquire the right partners.â
Quentin looked confused. âHalal? Whatâs that?â
âIn Arabic, the word halal means âpermitted or lawful.â Halal foods are foods that are allowed under Islamic dietary guidelines,â Amina answered.
âInteresting,â Quentin said.
âIt actually is,â Dwayne added. âAccording to the guidelines gathered from the Quran, there are a number of foods that Muslim followers cannot consume. Itâs not just about pork or pork by-products. I wanted a product line aimed at that market and I wanted to make sure we got it right.â
âThat was very socially conscious of you,â Amina said.
Rachel shook her head. âI wish. With my husband it is always about the money. Donât let him fool you.â
Dwayne shrugged. âI wonât lie. My bottom line is very important to me.â
Amina gave him a slight smile as she nodded her head slightly.
âDidnât Basil and Troy go to high school together?â Rachel suddenly questioned.
Quentin shook his head. âI donât think so.â
âNo,â Dwayne added. âI think Basil went to Melrose High. You all went to Melrose, right?â
Amina shrugged. âI actually went to school in Atlanta.â
âSpeaking of Troy,â Harper said, a puzzled expression crossing her face. âDonât you two have a dinner date tonight?â
Amina took a deep breath as an awkward silence suddenly filled the space. Her eyes shifted around the table, everyone staring in her direction. Her voice dropped an octave as she met Harperâs stare. âI do,â Amina answered, biting down against her bottom lip, her anxiety rising a second time. âI actually need a big favor,â she said.
Harper nodded. She passed Baby Joanna back to her motherâs arms. âAnything,â she said as she excused herself from the group and guided Amina back across the room, through the double doors and into the kitchen.
Once they were out of everyoneâs earshot Amina blew a calming breath past her thin lips. Harper eyed her curiously, waiting for her to speak.
âDo you think I can change my clothes here?â Amina finally asked. âI canât go home to change so I told Troy Iâd meet him here. My father would have a fit if he found out.â
Harper laughed. âThatâs not a problem at all.â
Amina looked skeptical. âIâll have to change again when our date is over. I promise it wonât be too late though,â she said.
Harper nodded. âDonât you worry about that. Come on,â she said, gesturing for Amina to follow her to the back stairwell that led to the private living space above the
