little lady?â
He didnât say it in an insulting way. She searched his hard face. âDoes it bother you, my background?â
âNo,â he said firmly. âIf you want to know, I think a lot of you. Until you came along, Iâd never met a real lady.â
âYou wouldnât think I was one at times, though,â she murmured, smiling at him as she followed him into the kitchen.
âYouâre a firecracker sometimes, all right,â he agreed. He caught her by the waist after heâd put down the string of fish, and jerked her against his body. âBut I like you that way, Mandy. A woman with a temper,â he murmured, bending, âis usually pretty passionateâ¦.â
His mouth crushed down against hers and she moaned, the sound unusually loud in the confines of the room as she savored his strength, the urgency of his hard kiss.
He lifted his head, his eyes glittering with some new emotion. âWhy did you moan?â he asked roughly. âFear or pleasure?â
Her lips trembled and, embarrassed, she pulled away. âIâll get started on the fish.â
He watched her for a minute speculatively and then he smiled. âIâll get some potatoes to fry.â
It was a quiet supper. She enjoyed her crisp fish, but Carson seemed preoccupied.
âWant to call it off?â she asked.
His head came up. âWhat?â
âTomorrow night.â
He shook his head. âNo. I want to learn to dance.â His eyes dropped to her soft mouth. âWith you,â he added softly.
Her chest felt tight. He was doing it again, using that wicked charm that she hadnât known he possessed.
âI have to practice on somebody, donât I?â he asked when he saw her hesitation. âI thought teaching me how to make love went part and parcel with teaching me to court a woman,â he added with a wicked smile.
She flushed. âYou donât need teaching in that department, and well you know it,â she said.
His eyebrows arched. âI donât?â
She looked up. Her wide eyes pleaded with him. âDonât take advantage, will you?â she asked softly. âIâm afraid of you, a little.â
âYes, I know you are,â he replied, his voice deep and quiet in the stillness of the room. He reached across the table and took her small hand in his, rubbing his thumb over the silky skin. âHavenât you ever wanted a man, or was it that exclusive upbringing that kept you innocent?â
âThat exclusive upbringing is the downfall of a lot of girls,â she murmured drily. âMost of the others were quite experienced.â
âDidnât you date?â
That brought back painful memories, and she didnât want to face them. She shrugged. âI was terribly shy in those days. It was hard for me to talk to men at all.â
âNot when you got out here,â he chuckled. âIâll never forget the first time I saw you.â
âI slapped you,â she recalled with a wicked smile. âI didnât know at the time how dangerous that was.â
âI would never hit you back,â he said. âIâd cut off my arm first.â
âThatâs what Jake knows, thatâs why I always get rousted out of bed to come and save the world from you,â she laughed.
He studied her hand. âJake isnât as blind as you are, I guess.â
âBlind?â
âIt doesnât matter.â He let go of her fingers and lit a cigarette. His eyes searched hers. âGetting dark. Youâd better go home, before somebody makes a remark about your being here alone with me after dark.â
âWould that bother you?â
âYes,â he said simply. âI donât want any blemish on your reputation. Iâd fire any one of my men who suggested that anything improper went on here.â
âIt did this afternoon,â she blurted out and then
