telling me?â
Mom carefully places the list of names into her hemp shoulder bag. âI tried to tell you, but you wouldnât listen.â
âWhen?â
âLast week. I told you Ms. Kowalski had called me, and you told me you just wanted some space at school. And Iâll give you space, donât worry.â
âSo this is what she called you aboutâdoing the class?â
âYes, obviously. Why else would she call?â
I gulp. âUm, no reason.â
âKevin, please. I know that somethingâs going on here. Letâs just get it all out in the open, okay?â
Itâs tempting. Iâve never been good at keeping secrets from Mom, but telling her about the Book of Busts would be equivalent to announcing Iâve joined a Satanic cult.
âThereâs nothing else,â I assure her. âI just hadnât expected to see you here. Itâs a shock, thatâs all.â
She leans forward and kisses me on the cheek. âWell, donât worry. I donât want to embarrass you or make your life complicated. You wonât even know Iâm here!â
Mom saunters off with a lightness of step that I find completely inappropriate and quite enviable.
Iâm feeling out of my depth, so I do what I always do when things spiral out of control: I call Abby. She has caller ID, so I know sheâll pick up the phone after a single ring. Sure enough, the line clicks to life, but before I can speak her voice erupts on the other end:
âIsnât it wonderful, your mom teaching the Womenâs Studies course?â
How does she know about that?
âHow do you know about that?â
âBecause she came into my English class and introduced herself. Itâs not just your class thatâs invited to take her course, you know.â
âI wasnât saying thatââ
âI think itâs so cool what sheâs doing,â Abby bubbles. âIâm definitely going to go. The way I see it, Brandon and his pack of lap dogs have gotten away with their sexist agenda for long enough.â
I canât believe how like my mom she sounds. Itâs actually kind of scary.
âDid you hear me, Kev?â
âYeah.â
âAnd donât you agree?â
âUh â¦â
She coughs meaningfully. âWhatâs going on?â
âWhat do you mean? Nothingâs going on.â
âKevin â¦â
I take a deep breath. âLook, if I tell you, do you promise not to give me a hard time?â
âNo.â
âOh, okay ⦠Um, well, you know Brandonâs meeting the other day? I sort of, did go to it, actually and ⦠well, itâs kind of like Iâm ⦠sort of ⦠involved.â
Abby treats me to a lengthy silence before mumbling, âYouâre kidding me, right?â
âWell ⦠â Oh geez. Even now Iâm tempted to lie to her and pretend that yeah, Iâm kidding. âNo, Iâm not kidding.â
âBut why?â
âBecause I didnât know what the meeting was about. I had no way of knowing what I was getting into.â
âCrikey, Kev, your momâll brain you if she finds out. Or sheâll just cut you off, or cut you up, or throw you out and disown youââ
âThis is not helping, Abby.â
âSorry, but itâs true. Looking on the bright side, at least nobody but me knows sheâs your mom. Iâd forgotten she goes by her maiden name, and it was pretty clear no one knew who she was. Even Nathan and Caitlin didnât recognize her.â
I hadnât considered this. âThat could be a lifesaver.â
âFor now, sure. But itâs only a matter of time before someone makes the connection.â
âMaybe.â
âNo maybe about it. Itâll happen, and when it does sheâll castrate youââ
âAbby!â
âIâm just saying ⦠You know what you have to do,
