bearable.â
Bearable? Did I really just say that?
âOh, thatâs such a relief.â She visibly relaxes. âThen letâs call it a date for this evening, okay?â
âUh ⦠sure.â I nod vacantly. âHold on, this evening?â
âYeah. âCause, you know, you might be busy after tonight.â
I donât know why sheâd think that, but Iâm not dumb enough to blow an opportunity like this. âOkay. Sure.â
âGreat. Letâs meet at El Pollo Loco at five, okay?â
Iâm about to agree, but Paige has already left the room.
Before the Graduation Rituals meeting I make a quick pit stop in the boysâ bathroom to practice my reluctant-yet-decisive res ignation speech. I know I told Brandon that I was com mitted, but I canât take on Abby, Ms. K, and my momâIâm simply not strong enough. Anyway, the guys will probably be pleased to get rid of me. I run through my spiel one more time, turning my palms up like a martyred saint and furrowing my eyebrows like Iâm constipated. Now that Iâve nailed the right look, Iâm ready.
My confidence is short-lived. As I approach the meeting room, I feel my pulse quickening. Doing the right thing is okay in theory, but in practice Iâm running the risk of pissing off Brookbankâs most volatile group, which seems like an oddly self-destructive course of action. To make matters worse, I notice that everybody else has already arrived. I take a deep breath, but before Iâve even walked through the door they all rise and applaud me.
âKev Mopsely, you dog,â barks Brandon. âHooking up with Paige Tramell already!â
âWell, I havenât technically hooked up with her yetââ
âSheâs a total babe,â adds Ryan, completely ignoring my interruption. âI mean, sheâs flat-chested as a ten-year-old boy, but man, that butt. And what about those lips.â Ryan performs the universal jerk-off sign.
âBut just remember,â Brandon reminds me, âitâs the numbers weâre after, not a grade for how good a kisser she is. Got it?â
All eyes are on me, so I nod meekly.
âOh, and before you leave today,â Brandon says in a suddenly serious voice, âChase has some numbers for you to add to the Book of Busts. Sounds like he was pretty busy this weekend, taking one for the team. Or was it two or three, Chase?â
I almost wish I didnât understand what he means by that, but as everyone else is laughing, I laugh too. By the time the laughter subsides, I realize that I havenât yet resigned. And I know I canât, either.
Mom is still at work when I get home, so I have to call her to say Iâm going out on a date. It makes me feel like Iâm thirteen.
âThatâs great, honey.â Momâs voice explodes across the line. âIâve been hoping you two would finally get around to having a date.â
Whoa, that was unexpected. âWho? Me and Paige?â
âWho?â
âPaige Tramell.â
âWhoâs she?â
âA friend of mine.â
Silence. âOh, youâve never mentioned her before.â
âYeah, well ⦠sheâs a, er, friend,â I mumble.
âYes, I get that.â Another pause. âSo whatâs she like? I mean, how do you know her? Is she a musician?â
âNo.â
âIs she a good student?â
âNot especially.â
âHave I ever met her?â
âNo.â
âHuh ⦠I know itâs none of my business, honey, but exactly why are you going on a date with her?â
How did informing my mom Iâd be late home suddenly segue into the third degree about my love life?
âItâs just a date, Mom. Okay? Thatâs all. It doesnât mean anything.â
Another silence. âHmmm. Thatâs a shame.â
âWhy?â
âWell, because anytime you really
