for the rest of the week due to a family emergency. I’ll give you your space but please call me when you’re ready. Love Gary”
Alex looked a t the message and read it again. Work, I’d forgotten about work, that’s the last thing on my mind, how can he be so organized about things? She knew she was just avoiding the real problem. She deleted the message.
Should she call him? Even just to say how long she was going to be away, or did she want to call him to hear his voice? Her stomach was in knots.
Alex took the phone back off the charge r and dialled home. It answered in one ring.
“Alex , is that you?” he sounded desperate.
“Yes, my dad told me you called.”
“Oh Alex, It’s good to hear your voice, you sound good.”
Gary didn’t, he sounded tired and low.
“Gary, I still need time, I’m staying the rest of the week and will see how I feel by the end of the week,” she wanted to make the conversation short, she hated hearing him like this.
“ A week, Alex? We haven’t been apart a day since we got together. You’ve been gone for nearly 48 hours now, I really miss you, miss waking up next to you, I understand I’ve hurt you, but we need to talk this through face to face.”
Alex interrupted him, “Don’t think about coming out here Gary. I need a break, I will call you when I’ve decided when I’m coming home, but you need to give me time.”
“O k I guess I understand. Take care Alex, I love you,” his voice sounded broken and he hung up.
Alex fell back on the bed and began to cry, he sounded so down, but she needed to do this, just so one day they might move on.

Chapter Twelve
Alex woke up feeling better; she searched her suitcase and found some leggings and a pink flowery top. This will please Mom she thought.
Her mom was ready and waiting to go.
“What , no breakfast first?” said Alex.
“No , we can get something in town, now come on let’s go, your dad is working in his shed, hiding more like, so he doesn’t have to come with us,” said her mom.
“ We can have me and you time, Dad will be ok,” Alex said and picked up her mom’s keys shaking them in her face. “Come on, let’s get this show on the road.” Her mom laughed and followed Alex out the door.
They had a lovely day. Her mom took her to a cosy Spanish café for tortilla and café con leche. Then it was off around the shops, her mom spoilt her as always. Soon they were back home with lots of lovely new things.
She dropped the bags in her bedroom and went to find her dad, he must still be in his hideaway. It was a lovely little log cabin hidden in the orange grove towards the bottom of the large garden. She heard country music playing as she got near. She stopped and looked through the window and saw her dad in his checked shirt and jeans playing the guitar and singing away. She quietly opened the door and went inside. Her dad finished playing the song. He was good.
“ You look happy, had a nice day then?” he said smiling.
“ Yes Dad, it was great.”
“W ell your mom always knew how to cheer you up.”
“That song was great D ad, is it a new one?”
“I t’s just something I’m trying out, the guys are coming in a few days and we always like to try out new things. It keeps you alive trying different things.” Alex’s heart jumped. She knew just what he meant; she’d forgotten how much that night in the club had made her feel alive.
“Yes Dad you’re right. It will be nice catching up with Uncle Joe and the gang, it’s been a while” said Alex.
“You ’re still going to be here then?” he looked at her expectantly.
“Anyone would think you were trying to get rid of me .”
“Y ou know that’s not what I meant, have you called Gary?” he asked.
“Yes D ad, last night I told him I was staying the rest of the week, and I will let him know when I am coming back.”
“That’s good, put the lad’s mind at rest for a short time anyway. I just care about you both, that’s
