turned around.
Melanie asked Josh, "How are you doing?"
"Fine. I must have just been tired last night.   It's just like a low hum of noise, like having the TV on in the background."
    "I'm glad."
"I'm not sure what it is about you that does that."
"What? Blocks the voices? Maybe it’s not me, maybe you're doing it."
"It's never been that way before I met you."
"No, but before you didn't know it was possible, so you never even tried. Now that you know it is, you could be doing it without thinking."
"Hmmm. Maybe, but I don’t think so."
Their food came soon after that and they ate in silence. Judy came to check on Josh several times during the course of their meal. When they were done, and Judy brought the bill, Lanie noticed that the perforated section on it had a phone number with a heart next to it. When they got up to pay at the register, Judy handed him the long skinny section with her number on it with his change.
Melanie shook her head at the audacity of the woman as she went out the door first.   She waited in the cool air for Josh to emerge and when he met up with her she said, "Thanks for breakfast. I'll get it tomorrow."
"No need," Josh said and they walked across the parking lot. Melanie couldn't figure Josh out.   Had she groped him in his sleep? Had she said something out of line? He was cold and distant. Maybe she didn't really know him at all. He was like a different person this morning.   As they emerged from behind an island of low trees and tall bushes, probably to block freeway noise from the hotel, Josh grabbed Melanie by the waist, pulling her down into a crouch behind the last bush. Somehow he ended up with one hand on her head holding it to his chest. When she pulled her head away from his chest, he put his index finger to his lips.   She whispered in his ear, "What is it?"
    "It's him, he's here."
    "Who? The vampire?"
"Yes. He's just about to go into the office.   How did he find us so quickly?"
    "Oh no!   Your iPhone."
    "My iPhone?"
"We used it last night to map out how we were going to Santa Cruz. iPhones and most cell phones now have a GPS.   He was at your house. He probably found your account number and got on the Internet with the number.   It will tell you exactly where the phone is, like say you lost it, or it got stolen."
Josh grabbed the iPhone out of his jacket pocket, raised it over his head, and was about to smash it to the ground.
    "What are you doing?"
    "Getting rid of my iPhone."
"You could just turn it off."
"Um, right. Guess I got caught up in the moment."
"It's understandable. What are we going to do?"
Josh turned off his iPhone and put it back in his pocket. "When he goes into the office, you run to the room and grab the duffle bag, helmets, and the other leather jacket.   Leave the key on the bed and meet me in the back parking lot around the corner. I'll take the bike back there and we'll go out the back driveway so they won't hear the bike or see us leaving." He handed her the huge key. He kissed her on the top of her head and said, "Okay, now go," and they were both off on their separate ways.
He wasn't sure why he kissed her like he did.   It puzzled him as he threw the kickstand back and started moving the bike through the parking lot and around the corner.
Like a flash, Melanie was in the room and shoving everything into the duffle bag.   She put the big leather coat on, slung the bag on her back, and grabbed the helmets. She took one last look around the room and slowly opened the door to see if anyone was coming.   When she saw the coast was clear, she darted for the back parking lot, pulling her helmet on as she ran.   When she got to the bike, Josh already had his gloves on and the bike running. She jumped on the back and they were on the freeway heading south in less than a minute.
