patient. But for you, I’ll try. I’ll try really hard. Because you’re worth it and besides, I love you,” he said.
Sarah felt like looking away from Lash’s intense blue eyes, but she couldn’t break the contact. Lash glanced away as he came to a stop sign.
Sarah looked down and realized she was still holding tightly to his hand. “I don’t know what to say to that.”
Lash turned down the little road leading to her grandmother’s house and rubbed his thumb over the back of her hand. “Don’t say anything. Just give me a chance. That’s all I’ve ever asked you for.”
Sarah looked down at their hands and made up her mind. “Okay. If you give me the time I need, I’ll give us a chance,” she said quietly.
Lash let out a huge sigh and turned to smile at her. It was the sweetest, most humble, and grateful smile she’d ever seen. She felt unworthy of it and it must have shown, because Lash shook his head at her.
“Every second I have to wait to be together with you will be hell, but in the end when we’re finally together it will all be worth it. If I can have you, nothing else in my pathetic, horrible life will matter.”
Sarah realized that they had reached the house and had pulled to a stop in the driveway.
“Lash . . .,” she said with a sad shake of her head. Lash reached over and touched her chin gently with his finger, lifting her face to his.
“You don’t have to say anything. Just give me a kiss good bye and I’ll see you later tonight for dinner,” he said looking hopeful.
Sarah narrowed her eyes at him warningly. “I let that kiss this afternoon go because you were overcome by raining leaves. I am not kissing you good bye Lash,” she said firmly, ignoring his puppy dog face.
Lash gave up and laughed before getting out and walking around to her side of the car. Sarah winced when she realized he was going to open the door for her.
He held his hand out for hers and she placed hers in his hand with a sigh. He assisted her out of the car with a flourish and a happy grin.
“You know, you’re taking this old fashioned stuff a bit far, don’t ya think?” she asked as the wind came off the ocean and whipped her hair out in a fan around her face.
Lash looked at her with an arrested look on his face and shook his head. “You’re the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen. Your hair is like a constant sunset and your eyes are tragically beautiful. I could never get tired of looking at you. Ever,” he said, pulling her slowly towards him.
Sarah swallowed and tried to talk, but was silenced when he just pulled her in for a long hug, holding her tightly as he rested his chin against her head. She heard a car pull up into the gravel driveway behind them and tried to pull back so she could turn to see who it was, but Lash refused to loosen his arms. She tilted her head up to see Lash staring over her shoulder, his blue eyes, now icy and remote. She heard a car door slam and wiggled to be free. Lash allowed her to turn around but his arms remained securely around her.
Sarah turned around to see Zane standing in front of them. He was alone and he looked slightly dazed and perplexed.
“What are you doing here Lash?” he finally asked looking back and forth between Lash and Sarah.
Lash squeezed Sarah tightly before answering. “Just seeing my girlfriend home. I’m going to run back and get dad for dinner and then I’ll be right back. Don’t miss me too much Sarah,” he said before bending down to kiss her on the cheek.
Sarah glared up at Lash’s mischievous face and sighed as she watched him walk around the car and get in.
She and Zane watched him drive away with a carefree wave, leaving them alone in front of the house.
Sarah couldn’t even look at Zane, so she turned away from him and walked up the front steps.
    “ Sarah?”
Sarah looked back, surprised at the soft, pain filled voice. Zane was standing in the same spot, looking anguished and helpless. Sarah immediately
