what we need to know, and if that doesnât work out, weâll find what we need some other way.â
âYou sound awfully sure of that.â
A big drop of water fell from one of the trees and plopped down on Rhodesâs bare head. He wiped a hand across it and said, âItâs always worked out that way before.â
âThen maybe it will again,â Andy said. âYou want me to go around and talk to people at the closest houses to see if they saw anything last night?â
âTake your evidence by the jail first and come back. Ask about the last few weeks, not just last night.â
âGot it,â Andy said. âYou see that old pickup over there?â
He was referring to the rusted-out heap with the hackberry tree growing up through the engine compartment.
âHard to miss,â Rhodes said.
âThat thingâs older than I am,â Andy said. He gave Rhodes an appraising look. âIt might even be older than you are. This place has been deserted a long time. I heard itâs supposed to be haunted.â
âSo they tell me,â Rhodes said.
Andy took off his hat and shook off a drop of water. Rhodes envied him again.
âMost people probably stay away from it if itâs haunted,â Andy said as he settled the hat back on his head. âMakes it a good place for drug deals.â
âYou didnât run into any ghosts while you were in there, did you?â
âNope. They donât come out in the daytime, do they?â
Rhodes shook his head. âIâm not sure what they do. How about mice? See any of those?â
Andy grinned, and Rhodes suspected that Ruth had made some sort of comment to him.
âI think mice are like ghosts,â Andy said. âThey only come out at night.â
âMaybe so,â Rhodes said. âAre you about through here?â
âI want to look around inside some more. Probably another hour and Iâll be done.â
âDonât forget to ask the neighbors if theyâve seen or heard anything unusual lately, not just last night.â Rhodes didnât think theyâd get any information, but he liked to be as thorough as possible. âBy the way, Jennifer Loamâs out front, taking pictures.â
Andy looked alarmed. âI hope you donât think I told her about this.â
âI know you didnât. She heard about it from Ruth.â
âYeah, I was there. Ruth thinks Seepy Benton needs to look this place over. You know about his new business?â
âClearview Paranomal Investigations,â Rhodes said.
âRight. If there are any ghosts here, he can find them. Maybe they saw the murder and can tell us who did it.â
Rhodes laughed. âThat would sure save us a lot of work.â
âAre you going to let Benton look it over? See what he can find?â
âYou think heâd find anything?â
âYou never can tell,â Andy said. âIt might be worth a try.â
âProbably not,â Rhodes said. âBesides, the results might be skewed because of what happened last night.â
âHowâs that?â Andy asked.
âThere might be a brand-new ghost haunting the place now.â
Andy took off his hat and held it in front of him in both hands as if out of respect for the dead. âYouâre right, but that would be even better.â
âHow could it be better?â
âWe wouldnât have to question the other ghosts. Weâd just ask Fosheeâs ghost who shot him.â
âIf it were only that easy,â Rhodes said.

Chapter 6
Rhodes was on his way back to the jail when Hack called him on the radio.
âYou need to stop by the mayorâs office,â Hack said.
âHeâs in his office?â Rhodes asked.
âThatâs what his secretary said.â
The city of Clearview contracted its policing services out to the county, but the mayor, Clifford Clement, liked
