to think of himself as Rhodesâs boss. Rhodes didnât feel that way. He was paid by the county, and the county was paid by the city, so Rhodes thought of the county commissioners as being his employers.
Clementâs position as mayor was purely a part-time job, and not a well-paying one, either. Clement didnât need the money, having achieved success in life the old-fashioned way, by selling mutual funds and managing other peopleâs money. Rhodes thought that Clement liked being the mayor because it gave him the opportunity to order the city employees around. Or try to.
Clement usually spent the mornings at his place of business or on the local golf course and came into his office in the afternoons if there was anything that needed his attention, which is why Rhodes was surprised to hear that he was in the office this early in the day.
Clement didnât like Rhodes very much because heâd been a suspect in a murder investigation at one time. Rhodes had told him there was nothing personal in the investigation, but Clement still resented it.
âDid his secretary mention what the mayor wanted with me?â Rhodes asked Hack.
âI meant to say administrative assistant,â Hack said.
âThatâs okay,â Rhodes said. âAlice wouldnât mind being called a secretary.â
Alice King was the mayorâs secretary, or administrative assistant, and Rhodes suspected that she did most of the work that got done in the office.
âWhatever you want to call her, you need to go by there,â Hack said.
âIâm on my way,â Rhodes said. âAnything else?â
âNothing you need to worry about,â Hack said, which immediately caused Rhodes to worry.
âTell me,â he said.
âWell, Miz Loomis has called three times.â
âTurn signals,â Rhodes said.
âYou got it. Hard to believe, but some people just wonât use âem.â
âShe give you their plate numbers?â
âAlways does.â
âYou told her weâd send them all a citation, first thing?â
âJust like I always do. One of these days, sheâs gonna catch on though.â
âWeâll cross that bridge when we have to. What else?â
âThatâs about it.â
âYouâre sure?â
âNothinâ to tell,â Hack said. âJust that Seepy Bentonâs been by here.â
Now they were getting down to it. âWhat did he want?â
âHe was just askinâ if I knew what you might think about somethinâ.â
âWhat specifically did he want to know about?â
âThat haunted house. The one where the murder was. The murder you wouldnât tell me about last night. That one.â
If there was anything Hack knew how to do, it was to hold a grudge.
âI knew youâd find out all about it when Ruth came in.â
âSure. Sheâs not like some people I could name. She doesnât keep everything to herself. Sheâll let people know whatâs goinâ on.â
âWeâre drifting off the subject here,â Rhodes said.
âWhat subject was that?â
âSeepy Benton and the haunted house.â
âWell, you know about his new business, that ghost stuff. He wanted to know if I thought youâd let him in the house.â
âWhat did you tell him?â
âWhat do you think I told him?â
âHack,â Rhodes said.
âOkay. I told him that you were a hard man and had a mean streak, thatâs what. Maybe not in those exact words, but I let him know you wouldnât let him in there.â
âGood,â Rhodes said.
âHeâs gonna come at you anyway. He swears he can find a ghost if thereâs one in there.â Hack paused. âMice, too. He said heâs good with mice.â
Ruth had been talking, all right, but Rhodes wasnât going to give Hack the satisfaction of commenting on the
