intelligent women. If you get the chance to work for him,â she continued seriously, âgo for it. He is seriously a great teacher.â
The idea of being taught anything by Theo Kyriakis made a shudder of distaste trace a shaky path down her spine. âI really donât think thatâs going to happen.â
The other woman shrugged. âNo, youâre probably right; he doesnât mix business and pleasure.â
The mortified colour flew to Bethâs cheeks. âGod, no, itâs not like that.â
âNot my business,â said the blonde cheerfully. âBut, if you are looking for a job, Iâm ready to fly the coop. Heâs offered me the New York office, but Iâm not so sure,â she revealed with surprising candour.
âI thought you were his assistant.â
âI amâor I was; Theo likes to work with people he thinks have potential.â
Beth, who had heard enough about perfect boss Theo, released a slow, cleansing breath and changed the subjectâanything but Theo Kyriakis was fine by her. âWhere are we going?â
âThe spa is our first stop⦠Youâre booked in for the usual suspects.â
Beth, who hadnât a clue what the usual suspects entailed, nodded.
âI could do with a massage myself,â Nicola mused, rotating her shoulders. âBut no time,â she added regretfully.
âYou probably think this is odd?â
The blondeâs pencilled brows rose. âTheo always has a reason and if he wants me to know he tells me; if notâ¦â She looked at Beth and shrugged.
The spa turned out to be every bit as luxurious as Beth had anticipated, but the afternoon of pampering and relaxation she had expected never really happened.
From the moment she arrived she was organised with military precision, attacked from all sides by a stream of professionals who all had a no pain, no gain mentality.
When Nicola returned two hours later she been buffed, polished and clipped within an inch of her life.
âSo how was that?â Nicola asked.
âI had no idea that grooming could be so painful. If anyone comes within fifty yards of me with wax again I will prosecute. It is assault,â Beth told her bitterly.
Nicola looked sympathetic. âDonât worry, youâve only got hair and nails leftâthatâs relatively painless.â
âThis is a salon?â Beth said, shading her eyes as she stared up at the impressive façade of the Georgian terrace they had just stopped in front of.
âItâs not a salon; itâs Theoâs London place. Have you never been here?â
Beth shook her head and thought I donât want to be here now .
âThe stylists are here.â
âI was expectingâ¦â She stopped, shook her head and heaved a sighâwhy waste her breath?
It was fast becoming obvious that her expectations were not of any real importanceâwhat Theo wanted, Theo got.
âI donât suppose I have any say in the matter.â Beth caught the other woman looking at her oddly and forced a smile. âCome on then, letâs get it over with,â she said gloomily as she approached the building with the enthusiasm of a condemned woman.
CHAPTER SIX
T HEO, who had been drumming his fingers on the desk, stopped as the door opened. He saw Nicola standing there and frowned.
âI said have her ready for seven.â
Nicola glanced at her watch. âItâs only a quarter after.â
âThe clock is still ticking. How long does it take to cut a womanâs hair and put her in some clothes? I would have thoughtâ¦â He broke off and frowned as the intrusive sound of the army of stylists exiting noisily in the hallway drowned him out.
âSheâs still upstairs.â
Theo hid his frustration behind a stony expression. âWhy?â
Nicola held up her hands. âLook, donât blame the messenger. I tried, I really did, but
