her that the thought of losing him
hurt so much? And he looked far too serious for whatever he had to tell her to
be anything but bad news.
    "I'm sorry, Anja . I haven't exactly been truthful."
    She bit her lip
and screwed her eyes shut. Here it came. He was married. He had to be. Either
that or an ax murderer.
    "To you or
Mary for matter."
    That brought her
head up, and he smiled at her.
    "What has
Mary got to do with any of this?"
    "Everything
and nothing, really." He took a step toward her and flinched when she put
her hand up to stop him.
    "Don't you
dare touch me now. What have you done to Mary? Explain
yourself now, damn you. You know how important that shelter is to her. If
you've done something to jeopardize this, then—"
" Anja , I'm Montagu Enterprises," he interrupted her.
    "What?"
She couldn’t have heard him right, but he simply stood there and nodded at her.
"You can't be. That firm is run by ... by ... shit."
    He laughed, and
this time when he approached she didn't stop him. He took her hand in his and
squeezed. "Ethan Montagu, that's me."
    "But, why? I
don't understand why you would pretend to be a homeless person."
    He sighed and
shrugged his impressive shoulders. "Remember what I said about Mutt?"
His gaze searched her face, and she nodded.
    "Yes, I do.
You said people would tell him things that they wouldn't tell you, and you used
him to find the most needy people and bring them to
the shelter."
    "That's
right, baby. I was looking for a worthy cause. I do this every Christmas."
He smiled and enveloped her hand with both of his when she gripped him tighter.
"This year I chose the homeless. But I had to go undercover. Ethan
Montagu— that guy—everyone will open doors for. Money talks, and people
only show their best sides. Everyone wants to be friends with that Ethan, and for my charity projects I need to get to know the real people, not
the masks they put up. I knew Mary was a good guy, but I take on the whole
project. Everyone who's involved."
    He smiled at her
and cupped her face. Her heart beat a bit faster at what she saw in his eyes.
    "The plan was
to find the most worthy shelters and to link them together, put in a huge
influx of cash, employ some of the trustworthy volunteers I encountered, and
make a difference. It's Christmas, season of goodwill and all that."
    Anja had to smile at
having her own thoughts on the season quoted back at her. He rubbed a thumb
across her lips, leaned in, and inhaled. As per usual her body reacted to his
nearness with embarrassing predictability. Her nipples chafed against the
flannel of her bathrobe, her heartbeat accelerated, and her pussy flooded with
her juices. Her face heated, and he dropped a kiss on her nose.
    "I didn't
count on getting injured and being picked up by that sassy blonde I know."
    He picked up a
strand of her hair and rubbed it between his thumb and forefinger and Anja's heart constricted at the emotion in his eyes.
    "I couldn't
just leave you there. You were hurt, and besides you had the cutest eyes for a mutt ."
    He snorted his
amusement, and the twinkle in his eyes made her giggle.
    "So, you
think I have cute eyes? I can work with that."
    "You have a
cute ass, too." She trailed her hand down his abs and smiled at his sharp
intake of breath. He grabbed her fingers and halted their downward progress.
    "So, have you,
baby, but let me explain this." He trailed one finger along her jaw, and
she leaned into his embrace. He smiled and pulled her back against his chest
until she sat cradled in his arms. "You asked me earlier why I smelled so
good, and whether that was a shifter thing. Well, you were partially right. It
doesn't usually happen to humans, but I knew there was something different
about you. From the minute my wolf scented you, I had a hard time keeping away
from you. When you broke up with that sleazebag, I wasn't going to let you get
away again."
    His arms tightened
around her, and she snuggled into his neck. He really did smell
