and tried to make it clear that Heart would be in a position to tell all when the time came.
âIâll read it through as soon as I can,â said Francesca when Ellie described what sheâd done.
Ellie pushed her notebook into her bag and got ready to leave. As she went through to change her shoes in the lobby she met Piano, who was coming back from an errand.
âPop Lowther was having a good laugh earlier, wasnât she?â Piano said, kicking off her outdoor shoes.
âWhat do you mean?â asked Ellie.
âWellâ¦â Piano slipped on a pair of brilliant blue court shoes with see-through heels and smiled. âSaying she liked your dress. What a joke!â She pushed past Ellie and sauntered back to the office. Ellie stared at her back, trying without success not to feel upset. She was still smarting when Carlotta came for her coat.
âIâm sorry I couldnât talk more to you today,â Ellie apologized. âBut I really had to get that article written while the interview was fresh in my mind.â
Carlotta didnât smile back. âYouâve got so up yourself,â she said. âItâs pathetic.â
Ellie was stung. âIâm sorry,â she said, swallowing her anger. âI do realize how lucky I am. But Iâll be out of here very soon, and Iâm sure youâll get your chance then.â
Carlotta looked even more angry. âDonât patronize me,â she snapped. âAnd donât bank on that article of yours getting into the magazine. It wonât.â
Ellie couldnât help replying. âYou donât know that!â
Carlotta sneered. âItâs the photographs Angel really wanted. Sheâll put them in and not bother with an article. Captions will do, and Piano or I will do those.â
âWell it was fun meeting the Lowthers,â said Ellie, determined to be positive in the face of Carlottaâs spitefulness. âI wouldnât have missed it for the world.â
âI suppose it would have been a big thrill for you ,â said Carlotta pityingly, ignoring the fact that sheâd wanted to hear all about it not long ago.
Ellie couldnât bring herself to reply. She flung on her coat and hurried off to catch the bus.
âHey!â called Sophie, running to catch her up before she could reach the front entrance. âCome on! Tell all. Was it fabulous?â One look at Ellieâs face was all Sophie needed. She put her arm round Ellie and drew her back into the lift and down into the basement. âDid it really go badly? Iâm sure it was better than you think.â
Ellie shrugged off Sophieâs arm, thumped into a chair and folded her arms. âIt was brilliant ,â she told Sophie, with a furious expression on her face. âThe Lowthers were great, I remembered what to do, and Iâve finished the article. Thanks to a tip from Francesca I really think itâs got a good chance of being published. I was feeling fantastic until Piano and Carlotta got their teeth into me. And I thought Carlotta liked me. Then she didnât for a bit, then she did, and now she doesnât again. Itâs crazy!â
Sophie sighed. âYou just have to try and ignore them,â she said. âI know they can be pretty poisonous, but itâs only jealousy. They would lov e to be able to interview people instead of running errands for Angel, but all they get to do is make up readersâ letters and make sure the horoscopes fit the available space.â
Ellie sighed. âThey can both be so⦠horrible .â She gave Sophie a weak smile. âThey donât really make up the readersâ letters, do they?â
Sophie smiled back. âI invented that. I bet Heart gets loads of letters from readers, without Piano and Carlotta having to make them up. Letâs go and see if Flynn has managed to get the car out of that shoebox they call a car park.
