replied. âSo that brings us to thirteen.â
âDoes that include Drew and Vicky?â Hannah asked.
âNo, not yet. Iâm hoping that theyâll fill in the last two spots.â
âWhatâs taking them so long to get back to you?â Ethan asked.
âThey havenât been able to get their parents to give them permission to come,â Emily explained. âBut all thatis going to change.â She told her friends about her plan to talk to Vicky and Drewâs parents later that day. âIâm telling you, after today, everything with Drew and Vicky will be different. Youâll see. Youâll like them.â
CHAPTER 9
Satisfied with their party planning, Emily, Hannah, and Ethan left the lake, heading their separate ways. Hannah hurried home to watch her little brother, and Ethan ran off to the school for soccer practice.
As Emily rode her bike home she began to get excited, but also nervous, about her plan to barge in and introduce herself to Drew and Vickyâs parents. In the months sheâd been hanging out at Drew and Vickyâs, sheâd called up to them a bunch of times, but sheâd never actually met them face-to-face. What was she going to say to them?
âHi, Mr. and Mrs. Strig. Iâm Emily Hunter,â she rehearsed aloud as she pedaled toward home. âIâm your neighbor, you know, from across the street. The house with the green shutters and whiteââ
Emily smiled to herself. They donât need a detailed description of your house. Theyâll know who you are. Youâve been hanging out there, like, every day for the past few months.
She tried again. âHi, Mr. and Mrs. Strig. Iâm Emily Hunter, you know, Drew and Vickyâs friend? Youâve probably heard me playing guitar with them? I hang out at your house sometimes?â Jeez, Em, just get to the point!
âMr. and Mrs. Strig, I would like to invite you and Drew and Vicky to my house so you can meet my parents. And I would also like Vicky and Drew to come to my sleepover party on Saturday. Well, Vicky will actually be the one sleeping over. All the boys will be leaving at eleven andââ
Emily sighed. Forget it. Youâll figure out what to say when you get there.
A few minutes later she turned into her driveway and slowed to a stop. Leaning her bike against the garage door, she took a deep breath and walked quickly across the street.
Emily climbed the lopsided steps leading onto the Strigsâ porch and walked across the creaky floorboards to the front door. Then she knocked on the door.
No reply.
Again she knocked. Again, no sound from within.
âMaybe theyâre in the back of the house. Of course, if they had a doorbell . . .â
Emily thought about turning around and going home, but she knew she would regret it. Sheâd gotten herself psyched to do this and she would not get another chance before the sleepover.
She grabbed the ancient doorknob and turned it. The door squeaked open with a pitiful groan.
âDrew, Vicky? Is that you?â a womanâs voice said.
âWeâre upstairs,â added a manâs voice.
Why arenât Drew and Vicky home being homeschooled? Emily thought.
âMr. Strig! Mrs. Strig! Itâs Emily Hunter from across the street. Drew and Vickyâs friend. May I come in and talk with you?â
The Strigs remained silent.
What is with these people?
Emily backed up onto the porch and closed the front door. Should I just go home? she wondered. But I canât chicken out now. I just need to go upstairs and talk to these people. After all, theyâre just people, right? What can they do, bite my head off?
Emily opened the door again.
âDrew, Vicky? Is that you?â
âWeâre upstairs.â
Now Emily was really confused. Wasnât that the same thing theyâd called out when she came in the first time? And why hadnât they answered her
