welled in Emma’s chest at the thought of them tearing the room apart and she quickly stepped between them and placed a bracing hand on Derek’s chest. “Stop it.” She glanced over her shoulder at Holt. “Both of you.”
Then she turned back to her brother. “Let’s go talk somewhere a little more private.” Before he could argue she grabbed him by the hand and pulled him out of the room and down the hall. She tucked into the first open, empty room she could find. Derek & Bryan followed and she shut the door.
“What the fuck is going on, Emma?” The vein in Derek’s neck pulsed wildly and she knew he was majorly pissed. “Just yesterday you told me that you and Holt were not a couple. Now I see you walking in together arm and arm.”
“It’s complicated. It started a two days ago when William injured Holt in the ring and it’s been building ever since.” If she were being completely honest it had been building for months, but she knew Derek wouldn’t want to hear the complete truth.
“Is this part of some ridiculous G ene France script?” Bryan asked, the tone in his voice nearly as threatening.
Emma looked from Bryan to Derek and back. She could say yes and save them all a lot of heartache. Her brother’s wouldn’t like the scripted angle, but they’d accept it. Still, wasn’t error by omission lying?
“Yes and no,” she finally answered. Hiding the inevitable would only serve to make things worse in the end. Whether Derek was angry now or later it wouldn’t matter. He’d still be furious.
“What the hell does that mean? Either it is or it isn’t,” Derek shouted.
“It’s both,” she shot back and then began to pace as she formulated her thoughts. “Just as you predicted, Gene said that because I went to the ring of my own free will the other night I’ve inadvertently put myself into the script. That I’m now fair game.” She shook her head. “He has this whole storyline worked out in his head about how we become a couple and Holt is doing it as a way to get back at you.” She stopped and looked up at him. There was pain and anger in Derek’s eyes and it hurt knowing she’d caused those emotions. “I tried to talk him out of it, but he says it will be good for business.” She shrugged. “Go ahead and say it, Derek.”
“Say what?’
“I told you so.”
“I did, but that’s beside the point. Answer me one question honestly this time.”
“What’s that?”
“Why did you go to the ring the other night? It’s not part of your job and you had no reason to be out there.”
She took a deep breath and held it for a moment as she steeled her nerves. “For the same reason I risked losing my job by going to the hospital with him.”
Derek’s jaw ticked and he closed his eyes and shook his head. “For the love of God, Emma. Why him? Why my arch enemy? Are you angry at me for something? Is this your way of getting even?”
His questions speared her directly in the heart. She rushed forward and wrapped her arms around his chest in a hug. “No. God no. I’m sorry, Derek. I love you and I wouldn’t do anything to intentionally hurt you, but a person can’t help who they fall in love with.”
“Are you kidding?” He pushed her to arm’s length. “Emma, he’s a sleaze. He has a reputation with women. I don’t want to see you get hurt.”
“I’m twenty seven years old Derek. I think I know what I’m doing.”
“You don’t have a clue of what you’re getting yourself into. Stop this before you get hurt. Stop this or I’m going to.”
Anger flared to life, quickly replacing her fear of rejection. She long ago turned into an adult and she’d be damned if anyone, even Derek would tell her what to do. “Don’t you threaten me, Derek Cruise.” She poked a finger at him. “I am a grown woman and I can make my own decisions on who I want to date. I’m damn
