life in this moment.
I head inside later to get the baked potatoes ready, I’m glad Isaac thought to put them in the oven for me. I’m putting them on our plates as Conner comes up behind me. It’s strange how I can tell them apart before I lay eyes on them. He puts his hands on my hips, bringing me closer to him so he can kiss my neck and nibble on my earlobes.
“I’m sorry about earlier, the last thing I want to do is upset you,” he tells me.
“I know, I’m sorry too for getting so upset. It’s still hard for me when people bring Robert up. I promise I’ll work on that,” I promise him.
He turns me around, putting me on the counter. He’s between my legs; hands in my hair, taking my breath away. He definitely knows how to make me forget all about my problems. Just as I think we will take things further, Isaac comes in.
“Sorry to interrupt, but the steaks are ready. Come on, you two. There’s plenty of time for that later,” he promises the both of us. We eat our steaks, talking through the entire meal. It’s so easy to be myself with them. I never have to worry about them judging me, or making a complete fool of myself. I begin to realize I’m falling for not just one, but both of them.
That night Isaac and Conner fall right to sleep after our long day together. I cuddle up beside them, trying to find the perfect spot between them. I feel so safe and happy just being next to them. I never want it to end.
When I wake up hours later, I feel like I’ve slept for a very long time. I check the clock, groaning when I see it’s only three in the morning. “Wonderful,” I say to myself. I really need to go to work in a few hours, and this isn’t going to make my day easier.
I notice that Isaac and Conner are both missing from my bed. I get up to go find them, I start to get a little worried about their weird behavior. As I walk down the hall, I hear Isaac’s voice. They are in the study, talking with someone on speaker phone. I know it’s wrong of me to listen in, but I have to find out what they are talking about.
“Peter, what do you mean he broke out? How did this happen? You told us as clear as day, if we did everything the DA wanted, we would be free of him forever.” It’s Isaac talking to Peter.
“Isaac, we just found out a few hours ago. His escape has everyone on high alert. The proper authorities are looking into the situation as we speak. As soon as I have the answers, I will notify you,” Peter says.
“We are as good as dead now. He will be looking for us,” Conner says. I put my hand over my mouth to cover my scream. I run back to my room, crying, trying my hardest not to make a sound. How could they keep something like this from me? If they are in danger, I need to know, to prepare myself if anything happened. I tell myself that tonight they will not ignore my questions. They will tell me the truth.
When Isaac and Conner come back into my room, I’m waiting with my arms crossed on my chest. “Is there anything you two would like to tell me?” I ask. They both look at me, confused at what I’ve asked them.
I take the first step and tell them the truth. “I heard your conversation with Peter.” As soon as the words come out, they both tense. “Before either of you answer, you might want to think very hard before you tell me another lie.”
Conner sighs and looks at Isaac. “We have to tell her. It involves her now.” Isaac does not seem very happy to tell me anything, but I think he knows I am not about to leave this room until they come clean.
I sit straight up now, ready for whatever they are about to tell me. Isaac starts from the beginning.
“Conner and I met in college, like we talked about earlier tonight. We both came from very poor families, and we were struggling to make ends meet and to pay for our college tuition. One night we heard that this guy, Dominic Lufrand, was looking to hire some people to pick up shipments, drop them off, small things like
