if every pregnant woman in a four-state area decided to shop in the boutique that day. Even when there was a brief lull in customer traffic, Colette seemed to find things to do that would take her to the opposite side of the store from where Tanner was.
If he hadnât known better, he would suspect she was avoiding him. Maybe she felt guilty about whatever nonsense sheâd fed Gina the night before.
At about three a man entered the store wearing blue jeans, a work shirt and a tool belt. âHey, Colette.â He smiled warmly at her.
âHi, Mike,â she said, returning the warm smile.
âFigured Iâd get in a couple of hours of work this afternoon if itâs all right with you.â
âItâs more than all right with me,â she replied.
Tanner watched as the two of them walked toward the back of the store. A moment later he heard Coletteâs laughter ringing out, and a tiny swell of irrational jealousy swirled through him.
âThatâs Mike Moore,â Gina said, stepping up beside her brother. âHeâs doing the carpentry work on the kiddy area Colette has planned.â
âItâs pretty late in the day just now to start working,â Tanner replied. He wasnât sure why, but he didnât like the look of the blond carpenter with the easy smile and the ability to make Colette laugh so musically.
âMike is working here as a favor to Colette, so he puts in his hours here when heâs finished with his real job.â
âAnd whatâs his real job?â Tanner asked as once again Coletteâs laugh rang out from the back of the store. âLet me guess, heâs a stand-up comedian.â
Gina laughed. âNo, heâs a union carpenter and is working on the renovations of a building nearby. He and Colette have been friends for a while. I think he has a thing for her.â
âThis isnât a baby shop,â Tanner muttered under his breath. âItâs a swinging singlesâ club.â
Gina laughed and moved away from him to greet a customer coming through the door. Tanner walked to the back, where Colette was explaining what she wanted to Mike.
âTwo little tablesâ¦like miniature picnic tables,â she said. âAnd Iâm going to order a kit of one of those wooden fortlike structures with a slide.â
âSo, you really want to go with the feel of a park,â Mike said.
âExactly.â Colette saw Tanner and quickly made introductions between the two men.
âSo, youâre just in town for a couple of days?â Mike asked him. Tanner nodded. âHave you visited Kansas City before?â
âSeveral times, but itâs been years since the last time,â Tanner replied.
âThen you should get your sister to take you on a little tour. Weâve got some great places to see here. Thereâs Science City, and the River Market area and the Plaza.â
âI donât think Tanner intends to be here long enough to see all the charms of our city,â Colette said, not looking at Tanner.
âOn the contrary,â Tanner said. âIâd love to see some of the city attractions while Iâm here. But I imagine Colette would be a better tour guide than Gina, who knows no more about the city than I do.â
âUnfortunately, that wonât be possible. Iâm just too busy to take off for sight-seeing,â she replied, her gaze still not meeting his. She smiled at Mike. âWeâll just let you get to work now.â
She didnât wait for Tanner to follow but hurried to where Gina was helping an older woman who was looking at the cribs.
Tanner walked back to the chair behind the cash register, his gaze lingering thoughtfully on Colette.
She was definitely avoiding him, and he wasnât sure if the reason was because of the kiss theyâdshared or because of whatever crazy conversation sheâd had with Gina the night before.
