to—the
caves along the ocean cliffs. They would be safe there. No witch would dare the
salt water catching her off guard in the caves. Momentarily, he forgot about
Embla's safety. Only Anca mattered
right now and he would vow to always keep her safe and under his protection.
The molasses spell began to fade. First their shoes
became visible, except Anca —her bare feet were the
first to poke out of the brown goo. By the time they reached the ocean cliffs,
all of the molasses was gone. They could see each other again. Gunnar felt Anca relax when she realized who was holding her, but
Embla's entire body tensed when she saw the ocean below her.
She shrieked. "Hold on to me, Gunnar! Don't let
me go! Please don't kill me!" He turned to look at her black eyes wild
with fear. The waves crashed into the walls at this point. He squeezed her
waist more tightly. "I won't let you fall, Embla. Don't worry."
Within seconds he placed both women down on the bare cold floor of a cave high
above the sea. "We are safe here."
    Embla and Anca began to
shake with the dampness of the cave and the wind whipping off of the ocean. He
zipped off and was back in a moment with two blankets. He wrapped first Anca and then Embla. "Now, Anca ,
you can come with me. We will go into the cave to meet my friends, but Embla, you'd better stay out here until I explain why a
witch was brought to one of our hiding places." She nodded numbly and slid
down the cave wall to sit. "Don't leave here Embla. You are safe. Calypso
will never brave the flight over the ocean, or the fear that it might come
crashing in here."
Embla croaked, "I know. We die from water splashing
on us."
Anca knelt down beside the witch, realizing the sacrifices that she made to save
her. "Thank you." She squeezed Embla's hand. "As soon as Gunnar
can explain to the other vampires, we will come back to get you."
The witch looked from Anca to Gunnar and back again. How could she trust these two, a vampire and a human? Anca's warm hand squeezed hers again. "I
promise."
A human's promise meant something, Embla knew that.
It wasn't like a witch's promise that was only made to serve a need of the
moment and then abruptly broken. Humans didn't make hollow promises. "I
will be here." She watched the two of them and spoke again,
"Waiting." She saw Gunnar snatch at Anca's hand.
Embla wrapped her arms around her shoulders. What
had she gotten herself into ? She could never go back
to the coven. They would burn her at the stake for sure! She was now the enemy,
a traitor, but she just couldn't side with that horrible evil woman. Fun spells
were one thing, quick recipes for gingersnaps or maybe a quick spell to make it
rain, or even better, a spell to clean the house. She liked that one the best.
But killing people and forcing people to do things they didn't want to do. She
knew that Zucar Kendlesmith needed someone to make a baby with since all the witches in Lompoc were barren, or maybe HIS seeds were the ones that were dried up?
She knew that she certainly didn't feel barren. But, Calypso had told her that she was. Why would she lie? A light
went on in Embla's mind, of course the crafty old
crone would lie! She was an enchantress who knew her stuff! She would lie to
all of them to protect her place as exalted witch. Zucar Kendlesmith probably had tried to make babies with
Calypso to no avail. She had seen him wooing her. The old wizard could barely
walk, let alone have sex.
Embla sighed. Perhaps the vampires took witches as
brides, or maybe the wolves would. Tears filled her eyes. Where would she live?
She started crying heavy tears and it scared her. This was the first time in
her life that she had cried tears. Tears are water, she thought quickly, and
stopped crying immediately. She glanced over the cliff's edge down to the
turbulent sea below. There was enough water around her to doom her for sure!
The two of them had turned away from Embla, no
longer worried, as Gunnar began to lead Anca
