and steal their souls. Now that I’m older and wiser, I realize it was just my evil brother doing his job.” She giggled. “Come on, let’s go inside and get a fire going. It’s getting cold out here. Then you can fill me in on your home improvement plans.”
The three of them walked inside together. Brutus curled up on the couch and looked hopefully at the fireplace. Rachel turned and looked at Jessica. “Thanks for coming out here tonight. I really appreciate it.”
“You’re very welcome. Now let’s get that fire going. It’s cold in here too! I’m dying for a grand tour and for you to show me what you plan to do to this place.”
Once the fire was snapping and popping in the grate, Rachel walked Jessica through the cabin. Rachel pointed out things she planned to do along the way.
“Wow, this place looks great for a haunted house.” Jessica giggled.
Rachel smirked. “It won’t look haunted once I get everything done. And I haven’t once run into an old miner’s ghost.”

Brutus jumped up and barked as Todd walked into the living room. Running into a dog half his size was not what he expected. He instinctively froze in place. Brutus cautiously inched closer and sniffed him. Rachel placed her hand on the dog’s head to settle him down. Todd looked from the dog over to her. “Is there any chance I can ask you a few questions now?”
“I don’t know what else I can tell you. I moved in yesterday and saw a bunch of stuff in the garage. I honestly didn’t think too much about it. It’s been a long time since I was up here. I wasn’t sure if my parents had used this place for storage or what. When I spoke with my father this afternoon, I asked him about it. He confirmed they had left the garage empty when we stopped coming up here. I hung up with him and called Deputy Logan, you two arrived and the rest is history.”
“It’s just procedure, Rachel. Did you hear anything or see anything last night?”
“I heard noises coming from the garage. I assumed it was the raccoon.” Her face went pale with horror. “You don’t think he was here last night, do you?”
“We’re not sure. Like I said earlier, maybe you should check in a hotel or come and stay with Jessica and me for the night.”
Rachel folded her arms across her chest, squared her shoulders and looked Todd straight in the eye. “Like I said earlier, no one is running me out of my own house. I appreciate the offer but we’re staying.”
Todd let out an exasperated sigh. “Very well then, here’s our home phone number just in case you have any trouble.”
“Thanks, Sheriff. Thank you too, Jessica. It was very sweet of you to come over and keep me company,” she said to both of them as they walked out of the house.
“No problem Rachel,” Jessica replied smiling. “It was nice to meet you, Brutus. I’ll see you around.”
Todd tried one more time. “Are you sure I can’t get you to change your mind? I’d sleep a lot easier knowing you’re not out here by yourself.”
“I’m not out here alone. We’ll be fine, Sheriff Bradley. I thank you for your concern though.” She stood on her tip toes and kissed his cheek. “Go on, your deputy and sister are out there waiting for you.”
Chapter 5
Edward Roy Templeton stood in the living room of his home drinking a scotch and water. Pacing the floor, he couldn’t believe the change in events. Damn! Why did the bitch have to move in there now? Two more days! He only needed two more days and everything would have been gone, including him. The one-way airline ticket to Australia sat on the table, reminding him the clock was ticking. Pacing the room again, he turned when the phone rang. “Ed Templeton here,” he answered.
“Mr. Templeton, I was beginning to wonder if there was any trouble, I haven’t heard from you in days. Is there going to be any problems with my shipment?” the raspy voice asked from the other end of the receiver.
“No-no, sir. Mr. Vee,
