we should deny the truth. But . . . it just seems wrong to criticize her now, thatâs all.â
There was an uncomfortable silence, and then Gail shrugged. âOkay, if thatâs the way you want it. Are you and Colleen going to count the votes next period?â
âI guess so.â Amy looked puzzled. âWhy wouldnât we?â
âNo reason. I just wanted you to know that I canât be there. Besides, I know how itâs going to turn out, anyway.â
The rest of the lunch period was filled with small talk about Friday nightâs basketball game and their hard-won victory. When the bell rang, Brett brought the box with the votes and the money theyâd collected to Amy and Colleen. And then he took Gailâs arm and walked her to the lunchroom door.
âAre you thinking what Iâm thinking?â Colleen stood up and grabbed the vote box.
âI think so.â Amy picked up their lunch trays and sighed. Now that Tanya was dead, it certainly looked as though Gail was moving in on Brett. Perhaps she should have taken Colleenâs advice and asked Brett to the dance on Friday night, while sheâd still had a chance.
Â
Amy and Colleen had just cleaned off the teachersâ table, when there was a knock at the faculty lounge door. Amy went to open it, and her eyes widened as she saw who was standing outside. âKevin. What are you doing here?â
âMr. Dorman sent me to take Gailâs place . . . if you girls donât mind, that is.â
âWhy should we mind?â Amy gestured toward the table. âWeâll be through much faster with three people working. Grab a Coke from the teachersâ refrigerator, Kevin. Itâs a bonus we get for clearing the dishes off their lunch table.â
Kevin opened the door to the teachersâ refrigerator, and smiled as he surveyed the contents. âHey . . . who said teachers arenât well paid? Theyâve got Snapple in here!â
âHelp yourself.â Colleen grinned at him. âMr. Dorman said we could. And then come over and join us.â
Kevin carried his Snapple over to the table and sat down. âOkay. Iâm ready. Which ones do we count first?â
âThe green ones.â Colleen pushed the vote box over to Kevin. âYou can separate them as we go. Just pull out a heart and read the name inside.â
Amy reached out to touch Kevinâs arm. âHold it a second, Kevin. Before we get started, I just want to tell you that I think the team ribbons for Tanya are very nice.â
âYou do?â Kevin looked shocked. âI thought you didnât like Tanya.â
Amy struggled for words. It was difficult to explain how sheâd felt about Tanya. âI guess thatâs true, in a way. I didnât really like her. But she was in some of my classes, and I feel bad about what happened to her. And since she was the head cheerleader, I think the team ought to do something to show their respect.â
âThatâs what I thought. Thanks, Amy.â Kevin picked a green heart out of the box. âShall we start? This oneâs for Brett.â
Colleen took the heart from Kevin and nodded. âRight. Chalk up one vote for Brett.â
âAnd this oneâs for . . . Brett again.â Kevin handed the heart to Colleen, who verified it.
Five minutes later, they were preparing to count the last vote for king. There had been a few lone votes for other guys, but Brett had received ninety percent of todayâs vote.
âI wonder if we should bother to open this one.â Kevin grinned as he held up the last green heart. âI think I already know how this is going to turn out.â
Amy nodded. âMe, too. And thatâs what Gail said when she told us she wouldnât be here. She knew Brett would get the most votes for king.â
âWas she talking about king . . . or queen?â Kevin raised his eyebrows.
âKing. At least
