let out the breath he was holding, briefly thought of going to the sheriffâs office, then decided nothing had really happened that he needed to report on.
But he sure could use a drink.
TWENTY-TWO
Owen went to the Red Garter Saloon and started drinking whiskey. After a few shots he began talking about the Gunsmith being in Saint Joseph. This caught the attention of three men sitting at a table, sharing a bottle of whiskey. They decided to invite Owen to their table to buy him a few more drinks.
Owenâs head was on the table half an hour later.
âHeâs out,â Fred Doolin said, leaning over to check.
âYou think heâs tellinâ the truth?â Ames Connor asked.
âWhy would he lie?â Denny Scott asked. âIf the Gunsmith is in town, heâs in town.â
âJesus,â Fred said, âyou know what it means to the man who kills Clint Adams?â
âA rep,â Ames said.
âA big rep,â Denny said.
The three men exchanged an anxious glance.
âHow do we do it without gettinâ killed?â Ames asked.
âWe plan it,â Denny said, âvery carefully.â

Clint got back to his room as it was getting dark. He went to the window and looked down at the street. The sheriff was still the only person in town who had taken any interest in him.
He was still staring out the window when there was a light knock on his door. He doubted that Bride had fallen fast asleep yet. His own stomach was growling, so the girls must have been hungry by now.
He answered the door and Bridget said, âCan we go and eat?â
âYou girls eat a lot,â Clint said.
âTraveling with you builds up an appetite,â Bridget said. Across the hall, Bride was standing in the open doorway and she nodded her agreement.
âWeâll just go down to the hotel dining room,â he said. âIâm sure the sheriff would like me to stay out of trouble.â
âThatâs fine,â Bridget said. âWeâve been eating your bacon and beans for days.â
âLet me guess,â he said, pulling his door closed. âTime for a steak?â

Fred, Ames, and Denny left Owen Brown with his head on the table as they went outside for some air.
âWhat do we do?â Ames asked. âWe know what hotel heâs in. Do we wanna surprise him? Or wait until he comes out?â
âYou wanna face him fair and square in the street?â Denny asked.
âI donât,â Fred said before Ames could reply.
âNo,â Ames said, âI donât either.â
âOkay,â Denny said, âthen weâre better off takinâ him in his room. Weâll wait âtil itâs late, so heâs asleep.â
âWe gonna kill âim while heâs asleep?â Fred asked. âHowâs that gonna give us a big reputation?â
âNobodyâs gonna care how he got killed,â Denny said. âThe headlineâs just gonna say âGunsmith Killed.ââ
âDennyâs right,â Ames said, âthis is our best chance.â
Fred looked worried.
âWhat is it?â Denny asked.
âI ainât never killed nobody before.â
âDonât worry about it,â Denny said. âThe first oneâs the hardest.â
TWENTY-THREE
They finished eating and returned to their rooms.
âAre you girls satisfied now?â Clint asked in the hall.
âWell . . .â Bride said.
âWhat is it?â Clint asked.
âTomorrow we go back to bacon and beans,â she lamented.
âI tell you what,â Clint said. âWhen we get to Council Bluffs, Iâll buy some cans of fruit, and the makings for some biscuits for the trip west.â
The two girls didnât look thrilled.
âHey,â Clint said, âat least thatâll give us a little more variety.â
âGood night, Clint,â
