living room are filled with our families and the smell of breakfast.
“Congrats to the grad!” Charlie shouts and comes over to give me a hug.
“Thanks Charlie.”I say returning the tight squeeze.
I continue to make my rounds to the rest of our company giving hugs, kisses and accepting the praise of the family. Today is going to have my nerves tied up in knots. Not only am I accepting a diploma for my Juris Doctorate, but I’m fucking proposing tonight. Both of our families are in on the surprise and I’m hoping they’ve kept their mouths shut. I want this to be a surprise. I want this night to sweep her off of her feet. I only get one chance at this and I don’t want anything to screw it up for us.
I spot Chloe in the kitchen and make my way in to see if I can help her with anything. Pulling her into me, I kiss her on the cheek and can feel her smile.
“Need any help in here Angel?” I ask.
“Nope, we are all set for everyone to start eating. We have plenty of time before we have to leave. Go grab yourself some food and make yourself comfortable. You have a big day ahead of you.” She says.
“Thank you for all of this Chloe. You know I appreciate everything you do for me.”
“I know love, now go eat.” She says and kisses me on the lips.
    My girl is absolutely perfect.
After we eat the families pile into their cars and we follow one another to Cambridge. Commencement is set to begin at 11 o’clock and should be wrapped up around 4 o’clock. I know I should be excited for graduation, but really I just want it to be over so that I can spend the rest of the day I have planned for me and Chloe.
During the ceremony I do my best to pay attention to the speakers and the line of students I’m supposed to follow up to the stage. Once I’m in front of the dean and accepting my paper in hand I look out to the crowd and envision Chloe’s smiling face. The past three years of me in school have been difficult for both of us, but today is proof that it was all worth it.
I walk around to the area our families are sitting in and receive hugs all around.
“I’m so proud of you Derrick.” Mom says.
“Me too.” Teresa squeals pulling me in for a big hug.
“Come here stud, I’m so happy for you. It’s nice to know we have a lawyer in the family. You know…just in case.” Charlie says.
I bypass the rest of the crew and head straight for my girl. Chloe sees me approaching her and brings her arms out to embrace me in a hug. I squeeze her tight and lift her into my arms.
“We did it Angel. Today starts a new life for me and you, one that I promise will make you happy for the rest of our lives.”
I continue to hug her while twirling her in my arms.
Bryce and my dad come walking over to me and I give them both a scowl. I don’t want to let her go, but I guess I better accept the congrats I’m going to get from our fathers.
“Nice work son, we are all so proud of you.” Bryce says shaking my hand and giving me a firm pat on the back.
“He’s right Derrick, we’re all so proud of you. You know Papa is looking down on you today with tears in his eyes. You made a dream come true just like you told him you would.”
“Thanks dad, that means a lot to me.” I reply giving him a hug.
I pull Chloe back against my side give her a kiss on the cheek and turn to face our families.
“Thank you all so much for coming today. It has been a crazy journey for Chloe and I, but today makes all of our struggles well worth it. I appreciate you guys so much for being there for us and I couldn’t have done it without my family. Now if you don’t mind, I have a celebration dinner planned for me and my girl.”
Taking Chloe by the hand I escort her out of the auditorium and to my car. I remove my cap and gown and hand it to Chloe to fold up for me. I know better than to try and do it myself. Once she has it perfect, I set it in the backseat and open the passenger side door for her.
My heart is thumping in my
