have to answer to me. And then her sister. And then the Hot Rods. Which would probably cause some Powertools versus Hot Rods feud, West Side Story –style. Nobody wants that. I wouldn’t take that kind of chance if I were you.”
“Wasn’t planning on it, ma’am.” He liked Amber’s mom almost as much as he liked Amber herself.
“Good boy. So long as we understand each other.” She patted his cheek twice, then turned on her heel without a backward glance.
Gavyn would have laughed if he wasn’t terrified Amber would hear and freak out. He couldn’t believe her mother had given him, fuck-up that he was, a seal of approval—even if it was a conditional one. Hey, he’d take that.
He sprinted back to where he’d left Amber and ducked under the material to find her sitting cross-legged with her head in her hands. Not exactly the state he’d left her in.
“You okay?” he crooned as he sank beside her.
When he reached out to cup her shoulder, she flinched from his grasp. What the fuck? “Amber? Are you crying, love?”
“Hell no.” She lifted her head, letting him glimpse the fire there instead of the icy tears he’d expected. Whew, he could deal with that far easier. “I’m pissed.”
“At me?” He winced. “Sorry, I should have taken you somewhere more private, where I could have done a better job.”
“Don’t be ridiculous,” she snapped, only turning him on more with her fighting spirit. “I’m angry at myself. For getting distracted. For being selfish. Look at this mess. Half the morning’s gone and I’m wasting time screwing off with you. Letting you boss me around instead of keeping my head on straight.”
    Ouch. That one stung.
“Funny. It didn’t feel like a waste to me.” He tried not to be offended or hurt. The truth was, he’d thought they were forging the beginnings of something special. To hear her dismiss their chemistry like it was common knifed him deep.
“I can’t do this, Gavyn.” She kept him at arm’s distance as she climbed to her feet gracefully then systematically wiped the emotion from her face. “I’ve got a job to do. The most important moment of my sister’s life is in thirty-one hours and twenty-seven minutes and I’m not about to disappoint her for the sake of an orgasm or two with a stranger. No matter how spectacular they are.”
Well, he had that in his favor, at least.
“Stop talking, Amber.” If she didn’t, he was afraid he might cave to the part of his brain screaming at him to take off for the nearest bar. It was time to prove he’d meant what he’d told her earlier. “Obviously, I was wrong about us. About the timing. Or trying to experiment without guardrails. Fine. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to leave you flat on your ass. I’m helping you with the wedding shit like I said I would. We’ll get it done.”
She blinked at him a few times. “You are? We will?”
“Fuck yes.” He snarled, snatching her hand and pressing it to his still-hard cock. “And in approximately thirty-seven hours, or some shit like that, you won’t have any excuses left. We’ll deal with this then.”
“Oh.” She swallowed hard enough that he watched her pretty neck flex.
His grin was likely predatory, but he didn’t give a fuck.
He followed it up with his best imitation of an innocent smile. “So, love, what’s next on your list?”

Chapter Six
Amber couldn’t believe her baby sister was getting married. After months of preparation, today was the day. She sniffled to keep her makeup flawlessly preserved.
“You okay?” Gavyn came up behind her at the mirror. She liked the way they looked together. He’d shaved and put on an expensive suit from his prior life that looked like it had been cut exclusively for his well-muscled frame. It complemented the deep purple gown her sister had selected. It seemed a bit much for the sister-of-the-bride, but part of her was secretly thrilled Nola had insisted, considering Amber had never gone
