explain the precarious situation he’d unintentionally gotten Bobbie into before she came downstairs. Since they were already pissed that he made her cry, he could just imagine how this was going to go over. He didn’t bother to knock. He just opened the screen door and let himself in. Jake moved down the hall and stepped into the living room.
Jessie spotted him before anyone else. “What are you doing here?”
“I came to fetch your sister.” He kept his voice low and hoped they’d do the same.
“Not without telling us what the hell is going on,” Frankie said, and everyone seemed to nod or grunt in agreement.
“I figured as much, but before I do I just want to let you know I’ve already told Bobbie, and she agreed to come with me. So this is really just a courtesy.”
Tyler shook his head and groaned. “Dude, not the best way to start.”
“Jake’s got an honest streak a mile wide. He tells it like it is.” Sam didn’t necessarily sound like it was a trait she liked.
    “So what’s up?” Victor asked.
“I’ve gotten a few threats that may include using Bobbie to hurt me. So we’ve decided the best thing is for the two of us to disappear for a while.”
“Who’s making the threats and why? How are they planning to use Bobbie?” Cameron lurched to his feet and yanked his phone out of his pocket.
Jake held up his hand and Cameron clutched the phone, not dialing. Cameron had plenty of high-powered connections that could probably help, but Jake knew the best people were already working on this and he trusted them.
“A woman I put away years ago has gotten out and insinuated that she’s coming after something I care about. Bobbie falls into that category.”
“Your brother and Charlie?” Sam asked, laying her hand on her belly.
“Beau took her on a spur-of-the-moment vacation. Just like the one I’m going to take Bobbie on.”
“Jake, that is a monumentally bad idea.” Georgie started to stand up, but Tyler put his hand on her thigh, stilling her.
“She’s right.” Joey got to her feet and started forward, but Cameron wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her to his side. “Cameron, everyone in town will be talking, which none of us really put stock in, but others do.” She turned to Jake. “Are you willing to put her reputation at risk?”
“Screw her reputation, this goes way deeper. Bobbie has had her sights set on you for years. Don’t you think taking her away with you might lead her on?” Jessie asked.
Her husband, Victor, put his hand on her shoulder and looked at Jake. “Are you prepared for that?”
“It doesn’t matter, because as he already told you, I’m going with him,” Bobbie said as she came down the stairs.
Jake turned around and had one thought. Shit! How long had she been there listening? Bobbie hated people making decisions for her, and sitting around talking about her was just as bad. She didn’t even spare a look for him as she tossed the duffle bag she’d been carrying toward the door. Instead, she focused her narrowed gaze at her sisters and walked right past him. He knew she was still upset with him, but her family may have inadvertently drawn some of her ire from him to themselves. Right that second, they were all in trouble.
Jake knew what he was about to do was risky. “Jessie, to answer your question, I’m prepared to do whatever I have to do to protect your sister.”
Bobbie glanced over her shoulder and raised one eyebrow in question. He decided to let her read whatever she wanted into his comment. They could fight about it later. Right now he just wanted to get her out of there.
“Whatever.” She waved her hand, dismissing him. “Jake has assured me this woman making threats is being dealt with. Until she is, we’re going—”
“On a little trip.” He cut her off before she told them the truth.
Bobbie took a breath so deep she seemed to get taller. “As I was saying. We’re going away for a few
