Jasmine said. âItâs definitely a fraction. One-fourth?â
âOh, this is painful,â Sydney said. âLook at what weâre missing. Shopping. Fun restaurants. A TV station!â
âSports restaurants!â Reilly added. âSports-stuff stores!â
âComic stores,â Sam said miserably. âCandy stores.â
We all sighed as we passed a candy store.
âWeâre probably going to a math store next,â Reilly said.
We marched along in silence. I tried to keep up and not get run over by the crowds pushing along the sidewalk. Or trip over other tourists who were pulling rolling suitcases.
âHey, Payton,â Sydney said.
Or walk near Sydney. I walked even faster.
Sydney caught up easily. âLook, thereâs another group over there.â I could see some of our classmates on the other side of the street, with one of the dad chaperones in the geeky Gecko cap.
âSo?â I asked.
âThereâs Ox,â Sydney said. âDo you think he knows? Somebodyâs definitely going to tell him. Do you think heâs going to get really upset? Do you think heâs going to go punch Nick out?â
What the heck was she talking about?
âNo, he wonât punch Nick out,â she continued. âEmmaâs not worth it.â
âSydney, what are you talking about?â I asked her.
âDuh, how your sister, Emma, was cuddling up withNick on the Ferris wheel?â Sydney said. âHow he had his arm around her? I know Emma and Ox arenât officially boyfriend and girlfriend butââ
âAugh!â I yelled out. Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh omigosh omigosh! I had not even thought of that! People saw me and Nick on the Ferris wheel except . . .
I was supposed to be Emma!
âAnd arenât you so mad at her too?â Sydney went on. âItâs pretty obvious you had a crush on Nick. And now your very own twin sister is stealing him.â
âNo!â I blurted. âThatâs not whatâs happening! It wasnâtââ
âYouâre in denial,â Sydney sighed. âIt is shocking. I mean, who would have thought your brainiac geek of a sister was such a guy magnet?â
Okay, okay. How was I going to explain this one? Maybe I should just tell her it was me. I mean, the whole thing was an accident.
But how could I prove that? And after the mix-up switch-up, we should have told a teacher or something. Sydney could totally use this to get us in trouble. Or sheâd hold it over my head so I would be worrying that she could tell on us at any time.
I was so confused. Plus feeling kind of dizzy andpukey still from the Ferris wheel. I needed to text Emma. She would know what to do. I pulled my phone out of my bag. I realized it was turned off so I clicked it on.
âWe are here!â Mrs. James announced.

SIDEWALKS OF NYC
âNew York, New York!â Tess sang out, raising her hands to the skies. Which were drizzling rain down on us as we walked along the sidewalk.
My mood felt like the weather. Dismal.
âYouâve got a great voice,â said one of the eighth graders in my group. I didnât know her.
âThanks.â Tess blushed. She looked at me and Nick. Neither of us had said much since leaving the toy store.
âEmma! Nick! Cheer up! Weâre in the Big Apple!â
âBig Apple?â Mrs. Nicely turned back to check on us. âDid I hear the mention of food? Good timing, I say, because our next stop is the pretzel stand on the corner ahead.â
âPretzels, yay,â I said, attempting to sound enthusiastic.
âPretzels, yum,â Nick said, sounding suspiciously like me.
âSheesh!â Tess sighed. âI donât know whatâs wrong with you two, but if you donât snap out of it soon, Iâm hanging out with . . . excuse me, whatâs all you guysâ names
