drawn, but because there was a race this weekendâand Sharon wanted her companyâs name on the hood of Lincâs carâtheyâd had to expedite matters. That meant trips to their corporate attorneyâs office, late hours at the office as she reviewed his recommended legal clauses, more trips to the attorneyâs officeâand faxing. Lots and lots of faxing. It was almost a surprise to learn that it was Friday and Sharon expected to be at the track tomorrow. Apparently, she had no idea how difficult it was to secure Hot Passes.
âOkay,â Emma-Lee said, bursting into her office late Friday afternoon. âI have you on a late-night flight to Kansas City. Youâll leave at eight p.m.â
Great, Marley thought.
âSorry, but that was the best I could do on such short notice. Ms. Taylor will be taking the corporate jet and so sheâll be there first thing Saturday morning and she wanted you there to greet her. Rhonda in the credential office has promised me sheâd have everything covered for all the Shelter Home Improvement VIPs, but if you need anythingââ
Emma-Lee didnât need to finish. The woman was always the epitome of efficiency.
âThanks, Emma-Lee,â Marley said.
âYouâre welcome, but Iâm leaving for the day. Whew. Iâm beat.â
So was Marley. She didnât know how sheâd make it to the airport on time what with everything she still had to do, but that was the nature of the NASCAR beast. It was a crazy lifestyle when one followed the circuit, one she didnât really want for herself. She preferred to stay at home. To enjoy her weekends relaxing. She rarely flew to the track once the sponsors were on board, but thingshad happened so quickly with Shelter Home Improvement that she really had no choice. Sharon needed to meet their public relations manager for Linc, the associate sponsors, Lincâs teamâ¦the list went on, and Gil had asked her to make the introductions.
And so she forced herself aboard the commercial flight. Marley was never more relieved than when she fell into her hotel room bed near midnight.
She dreamed of Linc.
They were back at The Plantation and he was kissing her, only something kept buzzing near her ear and the sound was an annoyanceâ¦.
She woke up with a start.
The alarm she had set was going off. That was the buzzing noise she heard. But she still had goose bumps from her dream, could still perfectly recall the way itâd felt to have Lincâs lips traipsing up her belly and towardâ
She groaned, clutched her head, then forced herself out of bed.
What she needed was a cold shower.
CHAPTER SEVEN
T HE TRACK was every bit as crazy as sheâd thought it would be. Since it was Saturday, race traffic wasnât horrible, and she left early enough that she didnât have to worry about a rush of people clogging up the entrances. Still, it took her a moment to find a parking spot in front of the white credential trailer. Cars came and went inside the enclosed area. Sharon was right outside the entrance, looking crisp and professional in her tan slacks and Shelter Home Improvement polo shirt that was the same green as their logo.
âThese are for Linc,â she said, handing Marley a bundle of the same shirts.
âThanks,â Marley said. Lincâs PR representative had been asking for the shirts from the moment theyâd agreed to the sponsorship deal.
âMarley,â Sharon said, âthis is Tim Atkinson, heâs our CFO. Brett Miller, our COOâ¦â
Marley tried to pay attention. She was usually pretty good at matching faces with names, but for some reason she found it hard to focus. âWhy donât you follow me inside,â she said. âYou can fill out your forms in there.â
The track at Kansas was situated out in the middle of a vast plainâbut so was most of Kansas, Marley thought. In any event, wind was frequently
