identity in time to stop the next CLTtheft. She was willing to admit she needed help. Quickly, she explained everything to Ned.
âExcuse me, I was told you could have visitors.â Nancy and Ned looked up as Dean Jarvis stuck his head into the room. âAm I interrupting something?â
âDean Jarvis, is there anything new?â Nancy saw him glance at Ned. âItâs okay. I told Ned everything. I had to.â
The dean hesitated, then nodded abruptly. âGood. Well, then, I checked with security,â the dean reported. âAs soon as Ned sounded the alarm, they shut all the gates and set up checkpoints at all the campus entrances. As far as we know, no one left campus with the CLT. Itâs in a pretty big container, after all. Thereâs a good chance itâs still on campus.â
âI hope so,â Nancy said fervently. âIâd hate to think that I sat in the closet while the thief got away.â
âIt couldnât be helped, Nancy,â the dean assured her.
Nancy shrugged. âDid anyone figure out how the thief got in?â
Dean Jarvis shook his head. âNo. But donât worry about it. Itâs not your problem anymore. Iâm taking you off the case.â
âWhat?â Nancy gasped.
âItâs too dangerous,â the dean said firmly.âThis person means business. I canât take the chance that youâll get hurt.â
âBut, Dean Jarvis, Iâm really close now,â Nancy objected. âI didnât really get hurt. Iâm okay now. PleaseâI know I can wrap up the case. I just need a little more time.â
The dean was unmoved. He didnât say a word, only shook his head again.
âPlease, sir? It would save you a lot of trouble. And besides,â Nancy added recklessly, âhow will it look if you call in the government now? Theyâll want to know why you didnât report the thefts immediately. If I solve the case and recover the CLT, they canât say a thing.â
âWell, when you put it like that . . .â Dean Jarvis began. He paused. âNo, I still canât.â
âI can solve this case for you,â Nancy insisted. âIâm very close already.â
âI donât know.â The dean wavered.
Nancy smiled. âThink of Emerson. Your science program.â
âAll right!â The dean threw up his hands. âBut only if you promise to come to me at the first sign of trouble.â
Ned waited silently until Dean Jarvis had gone.
âAre you really that close, Nan?â he burst out as soon as the deanâs footsteps had faded away.
âAlmost.â Eagerly, Nancy swung her legs off the bed. âAnd I will solve it soon. Right now,weâd better get over to the lab and find out how the thief got in.â
âThereâs no use in my trying to stop you, is there?â Nancy shook her head. Sighing, Ned went out to wait in the hall while Nancy got dressed.
By the time Nancy and Ned got back to the lab, the mess from the fire had been cleaned up. She could tell from the fine white dust in the room that the campus police had checked for fingerprints.
The room still reeked of smoke. On the desk Nancy found the walkie-talkie hidden under some papers. The thief hadnât bothered to take it.
âNothing new here,â Nancy said. âLetâs check with your friend Craig.â
Nancy explained to Craig that Dean Jarvis had allowed them to follow up on what had happened. âThe storyâs getting more involved than I thought,â she added when he gave them a confused look.
Craig shrugged and looked as baffled as Nancy. âI checked with all the guards myself,â he told her. âI even had someone watching the fire escape. The elevators, which werenât in service, were locked for the night. I have no idea how he got in.â
âWell, you donât mind if we check around a bit, do
