ssssomeoneâssss got to pay or ssssomeoneâssss got to get hurtââ
âYou leave them alone!â Eeni shouted. âWe all know the Blacktail brothers cheated.â
The snake grinned at her. âYum,â he said. âA ssssnack! Doessss anyone know if white ratssss are ssssaltier than gray onessss?â
âIf your bets are so fair,â Uncle Rik proposed, âwhy not make one more?â
âAnother bet?â Shane said.
âFor what stakes?â Flynn said.
âForgive what my nephew owes,â Uncle Rik said.
âAnd if you lose this bet?â asked Shane.
âIâll pay double,â said Uncle Rik.
âTssss, tssss, tssss,â Basil broke out into a loud, sibilant snake laugh. He laughed so hard all his coils shook and his head hit the ceiling, showering the hall with dust and dirt. âYou? Pay double? You owe ussss more than youâve got already.â
âIâm good for it,â said Uncle Rik, but Kit noticed his uncleâs snout blushing in the same way Kitâs did. A family trait. It made the whole family bad at bluffing. Judging by the mess his house was in even before the snake busted down the door, Uncle Rik didnât have a lot of seeds or nuts to lose in a bet.
âYou ssssaid you were âgood for itâ at the cockroach fightssss lasssst week,â said Basil. âAnd at the ssssparrow raccccessss before that. Youâre in deep to the bossss.â
âI . . . er . . .â Uncle Rik looked at his feet, embarrassed to be called out in front of his nephew. Uncle Rik was a gambler, and not one gifted with either skill or luck.
âWeâve learned better than to make bets with a historian,â said Flynn.
âAn historian,â said Eeni.
âWhat?â said Flynn.
âAn historian,â
Eeni corrected him. âItâs the indefinite article preceding a vowel sound.â
âWhat?â said Flynn.
âYou said
âaâ historian,
â said Eeni. âBut it shouldâve been âanâ historian. Iâm just saying, if youâre gonna insult a fella, get your grammar right.â
âYouâre a smart one,â said Flynn.
âToo smart for a gutter rat,â said Shane.
âI know what I know.â Eeni folded her arms.
âWell, hereâs something for you to know, Eeni,â said Flynn. âHow long does it take a python to eat a raccoon?â
âShe doesnât know,â said Shane. âBasil. Show her. Eat Kit.â
Chapter Twelve
RETIREMENT FUND
BASILâ S coils wrapped themselves around Kit and squeezed. The snakeâs mouth opened wider than Kitâs whole head, and his breath smelled like rodent bones and cheese ale.
Kit would not be Basilâs first meal of the day.
âUncle Rik! Help!â Kit screamed.
Eeni punched at Basilâs scaly side.
âHow dare you come into my home to eat my nephew,â Uncle Rik yelled, rather unhelpfully.
Kit realized if he was going to get saved, he was goingto have to save himself. He couldnât wriggle free, and he couldnât pry himself free. Although he had always been good at using his hands to get out of traps, they wouldnât help this time. Heâd have to use his wits instead.
âUncle! Please!â he pleaded in his most desperate voice. âJust give them your secret stash of seeds.â
âWhat?â Rik looked puzzled.
âYour life savings!â Kit tried to wink at his uncle without anyone else seeing. âYour reTIREment fund?â
âMyâwhaâ?â Uncle Rik began, then it dawned on him. âOh . . . oh no . . . Kit, thatâs worth far too much.â
Flynn raised an eyebrow. Shane cocked his head to the side. Even Basil slowed his squeezing.
Uncle Rik played it up now. âIâm sorry, kiddo, youâre a real pal of the paw and all that, but Iâve
