make me that way, hana .” Kaname smirked
back. “But then, you make me many things.”
To illustrate his point, he grabbed Derek’s hand and guided it to
his already rising erection. Derek didn’t delay in following Kaname’s
invitation, and together, they lost themselves in the celebration of
their new bond, forgetting everything else except their passion and
    their joy.

Chapter Three
The shrill sound of the phone awoke Byron from a deep sleep. At
first, he debated ignoring it since the warmth of his mate in his arms
and his delicious scent conspired to make Byron think of more
enjoyable things than unwelcome calls. Alas, he only gave his
personal number to a select few. This meant that someone from his
close circle of family and friends was calling him, and perhaps they
needed to talk to him regarding something important.
As things were right now, Byron could imagine a million issues
that could have come up during his brief break from business. He had
far more people who counted on him now and, yes, cared about him
than he used to, and sadly, this meant that he had more people he
worried about. The most important ones, though, his mate, his
children, and his nephews, were safe, so whatever this was about, it
    couldn’t be too serious.
Still, it was with great regret that he released Skylar from his
arms. He slipped out of the bed, smiling when Skylar rolled over,
grumbling slightly as he attempted to find him again. Byron pressed a
brief kiss to his mate’s forehead then went to take the call. He just had
to get rid of whoever was on the phone and then he could wake his
beautiful Skylar up for a repeat of last night’s performance.
The thought made him smile, and he rushed to deal with his self-
appointed task. The screen of the cell showed a number that surprised
him, though, and a feeling of apprehension coursed through him.
Malcolm. How strange. What could the man want?
Malcolm was the closest thing Byron had to a father and they’d
always been close. However, his niece, Sophia, had attacked Alexis

Whitaker, the incubus mate of Byron’s son, Morgan. Since then,
contact between Byron and Malcolm had been rare, and only because
Byron initiated it. He knew that Malcolm was very ashamed of what
Sophia had done, and in many ways, blamed himself for not seeing
    her madness.
Both Malcolm and his wife, Yuki, had left to Australia,
accompanying Sophia to the prison where she’d been exiled. Byron
hadn’t spoken to them in months, and it unsettled him that Malcolm
had called of his own accord.
Hastily, he took the call, but the moment he saw Malcolm’s face
on the screen of the cell, he knew he’d been right to worry. “What’s
    wrong?” he asked without preamble.
“Yuki is dying,” Malcolm replied, his voice low and broken. “And
    Sophia escaped.”
Byron collapsed on a nearby chair, not knowing which statement
he should deal with first. He heard Skylar awaken and softly ask,
    “Byron? What’s the matter?”
Naturally, the seahorse had felt Byron’s anxiety. Under normal
circumstances, Byron still preferred to protect his mate from certain
issues, but now, he truly needed Skylar’s gentle strength.
“What do you mean Yuki is dying?” he asked Malcolm. A soft
gasp came from Skylar, and then the rustling of sheets and clothes
sounded behind Byron. In seconds, the seahorse was by his side.
Malcolm rubbed his eyes, looking far older than Byron
remembered. “She…We were so careful. I don’t know how it
    happened. She’s pregnant, Byron.”
Byron immediately understood the problem. Malcolm’s wife,
Yuki, was a blue octopus. Whenever females of her species gave birth,
they died, but at the same time, they were very protective of their
children. Malcolm and Yuki had established in the very beginning of
their relationship that they would avoid offspring altogether. Yuki’s
