cradled his head. “I blew it.”
“You’re going to just give up on her?” Matt strode to the staircase. “I’m sure as hell not letting her get away that easily. Come on. We’re going to her house.”
“How do you know where she lives?”
“She told me she’s on the planning commission. I looked her up online like any good little stalker. Last name, address, phone number. Now, get your ass in gear and let’s go. We’ll convince her to take a chance with us, that three heads are better than one.” Leave it to Matty to lighten the mood. He was right. They should convince her they could all live happily together ever after.
Rafe walked to the rug by the front door to slip on his shoes. “I’m ready. Come on, Vince. Nobody’s taking blame, but we are going to see Raine. She’s the one.”

    * * * *

Flipping on his turn signal, Matt turned onto Iron Creek Road and followed a curve to the right then to the left before hitting the signal again.
Vince craned his neck, looking out the passenger side window. “How do you know where you’re going?”
“I drove out here to find her house after looking up her info. Like I said, I’m a good little stalker. And like Rafe said, she’s the one.”
A laugh came from the backseat. “There’s nothing little about you, Matty.”
Rafe had a point. At six foot one and a hundred and ninety pounds, he was larger than the average guy. “I have little patience when it comes to going after what I want.”
Stopping near the garage of the log home, he spent a minute appreciating the generous proportions of the Cape Cod-style house. It blended in with the mature trees in the front and the heavy woods in the back. Bright yellow dandelions dotted the yard. Homey.
He pulled on the door handle. “Let’s go.”
Vin and Rafe followed as he strode up the sidewalk to the wide porch. He lifted his finger to the doorbell. Deep breath.
    Ding-dong . Now, the wait.

    Chapter 9

Blink, blink, blink. The cursor tapped an imaginary foot at Raine, waiting for her to type something— anything —into the message box of her e-mail. What the hell could she say? I thought I could use a younger man for sex, but I’m too chickenshit of getting hurt? Talking to the personal-ad trio, finding out their interests and passions, she’d developed an attachment of sorts to each of them. She liked them all.
They wanted her to become part of their arrangement. Maybe.
    Vince, I—
The doorbell rang, sending her pulse racing. Saved by…an annoying solicitor? Women in avoidance mode couldn’t be choosy. She closed her laptop and pushed away from the desk. After her visitor left and a couple glasses of wine, she might dig up the courage to compose a note to Vince.
She didn’t bother to hurry downstairs to the foyer. The longer she dragged out this interruption, the better. Stopping for a quick sniff of the gardenia bouquet she’d picked up on her way home, she finally reached for the doorknob as the bell rang a second time. I’m coming, I’m coming. With a single turn, she opened the door.
“You’re not getting rid of us that easily, Raine Michaels.” Matt’s imposing frame should’ve intimidated her, but his shaggy brown hair ruined the effect. That and his surfer attire—orange tank, baggy beige shorts, worn flip-flops. “We like you. A lot. And you should give us a chance to prove it.”
Rafe stepped forward. “We’d love for you to take a chance with us. We’re ready to risk our relationship for you.”
Vince hung back. He shoved his hand through his hair and locked eyes with her. “I didn’t mean to scare you off. You’re a very special woman. We think you’re the one we’re meant to share our lives with. Will you let us show you?”
Her heart hammered in her chest. The vote had been unanimous. They all wanted to see if she fit into their group. She’d thought writing an e-mail to Vince took courage.
“May we come in?” Matt’s polite question reminded her
