weâll have to figure out a way to get into the backyardâpast the guards and the dogs.â
âWeâve overcome greater odds before,â Joe said. âBetween now and tonight, Iâm sure weâll figure out something.â
For the rest of the trip Frank and Joe enjoyed the scenery. On the walk back to the hotel they decided to buy another shovel and canvas bag at the camping-supply store.
The same clerk waited on them. âIf thereâs something wrong with what you bought earlier, you may return it,â he said.
âOh no, we just need another set,â Frank said.
âWeâre letting somebody else use what we bought this morning,â Joe said.
That story seemed to satisfy the clerk. He wrapped up the new shovel and canvas bag. At the last minute Joe added a small flashlight and paid for it with some Portuguese money.
âWe need to call Isabel and tell her what happened,â Frank said as they left the camping-supply store.
âRight,â Joe said. âIt was silly to think she was somehow involved with those fascist groups.â
When Frank and Joe got back to their hotel, they called their parents to let them know that they were all right.
Mrs. Hardy asked them if theyâd like to go to a movie that evening. âThe concierge told us that thereâs a theater just a couple of blocks away that plays American movies,â she said. âAunt Gertrude would like to hear some Englishâsheâs already feeling a little homesick!â
âWeâre going to call Isabel to see if she wants to do something tonight,â Frank told their mother. âThanks for the invitation, though.â
âAll right . . . but if you change your mind, the movie starts at eight oâclock,â Mrs. Hardy said.
âThanks, Mom,â Frank said.
After Frank hung up Joe dialed Isabelâs number. She answered on the third ring. He told her what had taken place at the Jardim AgrÃcola Tropical.
âOh, that was such a brilliant plan!â Isabel said.âNo wonder Frank and Joe Hardy are known far and wide for solving mysteries.â
âWe have another brilliant plan,â Joe told her. âAnd we hope youâll want to be part of it.â
âI trust you guys so much that Iâll say yes before you even tell me what it is,â Isabel said.
âNow, thatâs what I call having faith in someone!â Joe said.
Isabel laughed.
Joe told her their plan to find a way into Senhora Bragançaâs backyard that night and to dig up the suitcase.
For a few seconds Isabel didnât say anything, and Joe wondered if she was having second thoughts about going with them. But then she said, âItâs not stealing because the gold belongs to Frau Rilkeâand Iâm sure we can talk our way out of any trespassing complaint.â
âThatâs what we were thinking,â Joe said.
âThe Portuguese courts would surely give us permission to dig, anywayâbut then, getting that approval would probably take months and months, and I know that you donât have that much time,â Isabel added.
âNo, we donâtâand neither does Frau Rilke,â Joe said.
âWeâre probably stretching the law here, but those were terrible times,â Isabel said, âand I knowthe Portuguese people would be on our side.â
âWell, maybe not everybody, â Joe said. âThose fascists would probably figure out a way to get that money instead of Frau Rilke.â
âWhich, as far as Iâm concerned, is a very strong argument for going to Senhora Bragançaâs house tonight,â Isabel said.
âCan you pick us up at the hotel in your car?â Joe said.
âNo problem,â Isabel said. âWhat time?â
Joe looked over at Frank. âWhat time should Isabel come by?â he asked.
âTen oâclock,â Frank said. âWe need to be there
