perfect that it all seems like a landscape painting. I understand now why the owner neglects the road into his property; he certainly doesn’t want anyone else to discover his little piece of paradise. We’re so far from the city that, despite the moonlight, I can see thousands of stars in the sky. My whole body is in perfect communion with the surroundings. It’s as if I were always here, as if I were coming home.
Gertrude approaches me and puts her hand on my shoulder, she gently puts her lips to my ear and quietly whispers:
“It was here that you were created, Lou. In this lake, with this moon.”

Chapter 2
“Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.”
    J.R.R. Tolkien

Who can boast about being born in such a spectacular place? I feel like running and throwing myself into the lake, floating there and staring up at the stars forever. Nothing could make me happier than to be suspended there at this moment in time.
“Was it really here that I was born? And she…”
    “…she died, yes.”
I feel a deep respect for this woman who gave me life, and being at this place cements it. The crickets and bullfrogs gently murmur, calming me after such a long day.
“Come, dearest, we must complete our ritual before midnight,” Gertrude reminds me, putting her frail arm around me with determination.
I follow her towards this fantastic house. A great big black wooden door contrasts with the glazing that covers the walls of the building. The door opens, revealing Charles, who looks rather different than he did earlier this afternoon. He is dressed in a plaid housecoat with pants of the same fabric and is walking barefoot. He is puffing on a cigar and has a tumbler of whiskey in his hand; at least I assume the contents based on the woody scent that fills the entryway. He looks tired and seems to be fighting sleep.
“I had given up on you! Come in, ladies,” Charles says, turning his back to us and spilling a few drops of the contents of his glass onto the polished concrete floor. He walks towards the living room where, in contrast with the modern décor, a rustic fireplace takes center stage. He stretches out on one of the two brown leather sofas, forcing Gertrude and I to share the small two-seater.
“You have a beautiful home and a drop-dead gorgeous view,” I say, in a dreamy voice.
“Would you like a drink, darling?”
“Yes, please, I would like one. I could use something to help me relax.”
“And for you Gertrude, a little toad juice?”
I can’t help but make a face at the comment.
“Don’t wind her up, Charles, she’s had enough to deal with tonight already. Pour me a whiskey too.”
Charles gets up and walks towards a wood-paneled wall that opens at his touch, revealing a magnificently illuminated glass bar where many bottles are elegantly arranged. To my utter astonishment, I can see that he’s now holding a bottle of decanted Macallan “M”, the most expensive whiskey in the world.
“How did you…? I thought there were only four bottles of it in the whole world?”
“Oh, darling! Didn’t Gertrude tell you about my particular gifts?  My sign is the Earth and my gift is to create potions. I only needed to have a sip of the delicious elixir once and, voilà! I can recreate it at will. Isn’t magic grand? You’ll also be able to take advantage of your powers the way I do. But tell me, how does a young woman like you know so much about whiskey?”
“My father believes that to become a perfect young woman, I should be able to drink whiskey, know about beautiful cars and watch a boxing match without looking away.”
“I think I love your father, already! So, Lou, is your sign the Earth too? Please, please tell me that it is!”
I can’t help but smile at the enthusiasm I see on his wrinkled face. He hurriedly pours out two glasses and serves them to us before returning to his spot on the sofa.
“My dear Charles, you’ve lost the bet. I was right; she’s
