told her as she took the letter back.
Elizabeth stood up and said, âNow I think we should all go to bed and get some rest.â
Everyone agreed.
âIâll just find Snowball, then Iâll go to my room,â Mandie said as all the others went up the staircase.
âDonât take too long, dear,â Elizabeth called back to her.
Mandie went down the hallway and pushed open the kitchen door, looking for her cat. She found Aunt Lou, Liza, Jenny, and Abraham all sitting around the fireplace drinking coffee.
âItâs past time for yâall to be in the bed,â Mandie teased them with a big smile.
Aunt Lou looked at her seriously and said, âWe couldnât be gwine to bed widout knowinâ whut be happeninâ to my chile at dat courthouse.â
âEverythingâs going to be all right, but I still have to find the will,â Mandie replied as she sat down on a stool nearby. She quickly told them everything that had happened and showed them the letter.
âWe been so worried âbout you, Missy âManda, dat we went ahaid and did some lookinâ on our own,â Liza told her.
âLooking? You mean for the will?â Mandie asked in surprise.
âWe look foâ de will in our own rooms and in Jenny and Abrahamâs house out dere in de yard,â Aunt Lou explained.
âBut we ainât found nuthinâ,â Jenny added.
â âCourse dat will ainât gwine be in our house âcause we didnât take no will,â Abraham said to Jenny. âI been tellinâ you dat all de time.â
âBut somebody coulda stole it and hid it in our house, and I been tellinâ you dat,â Jenny replied.
Mandie smiled at them as she stood up to leave. âIt could be anywhere, because we donât know who stole it,â she said.
Liza also rose and said, âYou knows, Missy âManda, I been athinkinâ âbout dat day Mistuh John leave de doâ open, and seem like I âmembers hearinâ a lil noise when I goes lookinâ foâ him when I gits done cleaninâ in dere.â
Mandie quickly asked, âA noise? What kind of a noise? Where?â
âI donât rightly know,â Liza said, scratching her head. âSound like a rat runninâ round and round, or mebbe it be somebody movinâ sumpin, but wudnât nobody on de third floor but me dat day.â
âUnless somebody managed to get into the house without anyoneseeing them and getting on up to the third floor,â Mandie said thoughtfully.
Liza shivered as she said, âI shoâ hopes nobody got in dis heah house and up dere wid me all by myself.â
âWhere were you when you heard this noise?â Mandie asked.
âOn de third floor, like I said, and I wuz walkinâ down de hall mindinâ my own bidness,â Liza explained. âI be âbout to de next doâ to de office doâ when I hears dis heah noise, like I tells you.â
âThe door to the room next to Uncle Johnâs office?â Mandie questioned.
Liza nodded and said, âDatâs de one.â
âDid the noise sound like it was inside that room?â Mandie asked.
âI jesâ ainât sho,â Liza replied. âBut I thinks Iâm sho.â
Mandie suddenly had an idea. âLiza, letâs go up there and you show me where you were,â she told the girl.
Liza looked at her in surprise. âGo up dere? Right now?â
âYes, right now, Liza, because I am supposed to be going to bed. Everyone else has already gone up to their rooms for the night,â Mandie replied. âIt wonât take but a few minutes. Come on.â She turned to leave the room.
âNo, Missy âManda, it be dark up dere,â Liza complained.
âOh, thatâs right. Weâll take a lamp with us,â Mandie said. âThereâs one on the landing on the second floor. Weâll get
