the games. Then I started seeing Brady during my first year of college, and they really panicked.“
    „They didn’t like him?“
„They thought he was taking advantage of me, just toying with me,“ Filomena said smoothly. „They weren’t alone.
Everyone wondered what Brady saw in me. That did a lot for my ego, as you can imagine. Wher it turned out everyone was right about Brady, my family worried about me again. They knew how humiliated I’d been. When I went back to college in the fall, they were all relieved for a while until I entered a fine arts program instead of taking more useful classes. When Glenna and I opened our own business three years ago, Mom and Dad panicked again. They just knew it would fail because I didn’t have the vaguest notion of how to run a business. But they forgot that I’m a fast learner.“
Filomena laughed at him with her eyes. „Shall I go on?“
„I think I get the picture. So now you’re back in town and the family has something new to worry about.“
„Lots of new things to worry about apparently. It isn’t just this business about whether or not I’m going to cause a scandal with Brady. Now Mom has started to get nervous about the fact that I’m twenty-eight years old and not married. She’s been reading too many statistics, it seems. When I tell her I’m not particularly interested in marriage, she really frets.“
„Is that true? You’re really not interested in marriage?“ That bothered him. She was an independent little thing. He was glad she hadn’t married Paxton when she was nineteen, but it annoyed him to think she might still be off marriage.
„Frankly, I’ve got other, more important things going on in my life at the moment.“
    „Such as?“
„It’s a business matter.“ She looked at him. „Do you really want to hear about it?“
„Sure.“ He told himself he needed to know as much about her as possible. „I’m a businessman myself, remember?“
„When I see you dressed like that, it’s easy to forget.“
„It’s a mistake to let one segment of your life dominate all the others,“ Trent said seriously. „I’ve been learning that lesson lately.“
„Is that why you’re taking a long vacation this summer? Trying to get some balance in your life?“
Her unexpected insight astonished him. His eyes met hers. „How did you guess?“
„I don’t know,“ she confessed. „But most high-powered business people don’t take six weeks off at a time. The pressure is too great. If, as you claim, you’re not here to scout for Asgard, then you really must be on an extended vacation. It just struck me that maybe you’re here to, well, look for something. Something personal.“
„You are a shrewd woman, Filomena. You’re right. I am here to look for something. I’m thirty-six years old, and there are some things missing in my life. I came here to sort through my priorities and decide what I really want.“
Her eyes were warm with understanding. „You’re a smart man and a brave one. Not everyone has the courage to assess his life and make major decisions about it. Most people find it easier to drift.“

„I think I’m in the middle of a mid-life crisis.“
She shook her head. „No, it’s not a crisis. Not when you control the situation and handle it rationally the way you’
    re doing.“
Trent began to feel uneasy. He had brought her here to learn more about her. Instead she was the one conducting the psychological probe. It was time to get things back on track. „Tell me about the business matter that’s more important to you than marriage.“
She laughed. „Just a normal business decision. My partner and I have decided to expand. We’re thinking about opening our own shops instead of selling just through the major department store chains. It would allow us a lot more flexibility.“ Her voice reflected her enthusiasm for the project as she spoke. „We’re also considering adding a line of sports clothes for
