today?“
„I don’t know what the others are eating, but you and I are going to have tuna fish sandwiches, dill pickles and chips.“
She stopped and swung around in surprise. „We are?“
„Uh-huh.“ Trent looked pleased with himself. „You and I are going on a picnic. Your mother had the chef pack us a lunch. How long has it been since you’ve been on a picnic, Filomena?“
„Ages,“ she admitted, continuing to stare at him uncertainly. A picnic meant being alone with Trent. She wasn’t sure that was such a good idea.
„Relax,“ he said softly, as if he’d read her mind. „Ill try not to block out too much of the light.“
Filomena found herself responding to the invitation and the reassurance in his eyes. There was no need to let him know she was wary of him. It was embarrassing and annoying. After all, she wasn’t a nervous, unsophisticated teenager. „Well,“ she said thoughtfully, „it is a lovely day for a picnic, isn’t it?“

His grin was slow and compelling. „Yes,“ he said. „It is.“
Forty minutes later Trent finally pronounced himself satisfied with the picnic location Filomena had suggested. She’d chosen a pebbly beach near the lake. There were several convenient boulders to provide seating, and in the trees behind them was a cool, shaded forest floor covered with pine needles. Best of all there was plenty of privacy. Trent speculated on how difficult it might be to get Filomena down onto that bed of pine.
It would probably be extremely difficult initially, but once he had her down there he was fairly certain he could convince her to stay. He knew now he could make her want him. Probably not as much as he wanted her, but he was willing to work on that part. It was just a matter of time, and he had the next few weeks ahead of him.
He watched as she unpacked the picnic basket. Her red hair shone in the sunlight that filtered through the trees.
She had changed into a pair of jeans and a teal-blue shirt that was cut in a man’s style yet somehow seemed to emphasize her femininity.
Trent tormented himself with visions of shaping Fil-omena’s nicely rounded buttocks in his hands and lifting her up against his chest so that he could feel her soft, pert breasts. The images burned in his mind until he felt the sudden tightness of the denim below his waist. His body was already reacting strongly to the fantasy.
Trent stifled a rueful curse and unobtrusively shifted his position slightly as he lounged back against a boulder.
Filomena’s effect on him could be embarrassing at times.
He didn’t know whether to be relieved or annoyed that she seemed totally unaware of it.
„How was the drive into town?“ Trent made himself ask conversationally. He had already decided to keep this picnic scene as casual and unthreatening as possible. Last night he had confirmed the physical attraction between them. For a few minutes there in the front seat of the Mercedes, she had practically melted in his arms. Now that he knew for certain that she would respond to him when the time came, he could afford to take it easy.
„Fine. I was just on an errand for my mother.“
„Your dad says you drive that Porsche as if you were practicing for the Indianapolis 500. I’m inclined to agree with him.“
Filomena chuckled. „Does that bother you, too? Poor Trent. You’ve taken on a terrible responsibility if you’re going to start worrying about everything from my clothes to my driving. You’ll be gray in no time.“
„I can see why Amery worries about you.“
Filomena took a sizable chunk out of her sandwich and chewed enthusiastically. „My parents have always worried about me. They used to worry because I didn’t have a social life in high school. Shari, who’s nearly two years younger than me, had all the dates she wanted from the moment my father allowed her out of the house at night. I always sat home and read or baby-sat. Shari was on the cheerleading squad. I never even went to
