mound and came back with Jackâs wand before bowing low. As soon as Jack touched it he began to grow. A strange rushing sensation travelled though his body as he got bigger. His mind flashed back to Camelinâs bigging spell and hoped he would stop when he reached the right height. But he neednât have worried, seconds later he was back to his usual self.
âThanks,â Jack whispered. âIâd love to come back and see you all again.â
Jack watched as the now tiny Rhoda shut her eyes and raised her arms. He blinked as a tiny bright light exploded; when he looked again, Rhoda had a pair of beautiful red and black wings. Her body was a lot smaller than before and to anyone else she would have appeared to be a butterfly. Jack looked at her in amazement. They didnât talk as they made their way back to Grandadâs house. When they reached the gate, Rhoda fluttered around Jackâs head a few times before flying off towards one of the flowerbeds that was full of brightly coloured flowers.
Â
âIs that you Jack?â Grandad called from the pantry, âIâm just making myself a spot of supper. Do you want some too?â
âNo thanks, Iâm not hungry; I had a lot to eat earlier. Do you mind if I go upstairs?â
âYou carry on, and donât forget to pack some overnight things.â
âI wonât,â Jack assured him.
âAt the weekend weâll start getting the things together to make that buggy. What dâyou say to that?â
âThatâd be great but weâre still a team member short.â
âIâll ask at the Cricket Club. Thereâs bound to be some young lad whoâd be happy to join our team.â
âThanks Grandad, Iâll see you in the morning.â
âWhy donât you ask Elan if sheâd like to come along to the flower show next weekend? It would be best to come on the Sunday afternoon as thereâll be more going on then.â
âThanks, Iâll ask her,â Jack replied before he left the kitchen. He took the stairs two at a time. Jack wished Orin hadnât stayed at Ewell House; he wanted to share his news and see if he really could understand her without his wand. His room was dark but even darker was the familiar shape that sat hunched on his windowsill.
âWhat are you doing here?â Jack whispered as he let Camelin in.
âWell thatâs a nice welcome. Canât a raven boy come and visit a fellow raven boy without an interrogation?â
âI just wasnât expecting you.â
âWhat happened at the mound?â
âOh it was wonderful,â began Jack, then realised that probably wasnât very tactful. âBut you were right, they do make a lot of noise.â
âDonât say I didnât warn you. Did any of them mention me?â
âNo, should they have?â
âWell, a long time ago I sort of ate one of their little green packages. I didnât know it was fairy food at the time, one of them must have dropped it and as every raven knows, if thereâs food left unattended it belongs to whoever finds it.â
âYou mean you ate it.â
Camelin hung his head
âOnly realised what it was once Iâd swallowed it.â
âDid you shrink?â
âCertainly not! Did you?â
âI did but I was invited and the only way I could get through the door was to shrink.â
Camelin gave Jack a half glower.
âFairies,â he grumbled.
âThey were very nice, especially Twink.â
âOooh! On first name terms now are we?â
âI was introduced. Can you see them?â
âYep, and hear them. Donât see anything to get excited about.â
âThey gave me a giftâ¦â
âWhat kind of a gift?â
âA special one, I can hear and understand any creature now.â
âWhatâs so special about that, you could do that already.â
