his shoulder. âNow pick up Emily crossing down stage center.â
âDo you know a friend of Ms. Anderson named Ian?â Joe asked as he tilted the spotlight so that the beam stayed on Emily Anderson as she moved toward the edge of the stage.
âIan Link,â Jennifer replied. âBut I donât think he would count as a friend. Heâs her agent.â
âShe was talking with him about someone named Schulander,â Joe said. Jenniferâs head cocked back, surprised. âYou know him?â
âJoe, youâre shining the spotlight on Corey Lista, in the third row,â Jennifer warned.
âSorry,â Joe said, aiming the beam at Emily Anderson again.
âI donât know Schulander personally, but everyone knows of him,â Jennifer explained. âHeâs a big producer in the West End.â
âWest End?â Joe asked.
âLondonâs version of Broadway,â Jennifer answered. âSchulanderâs been holding auditions for his new show these past two weeks.
âThatâs the motive!â Joe blurted out as a thought struck him.
âWhatâs the motive?â Jennifer asked.
Joe hesitated, not wanting to give her too much information. âIn the play, I just figured out the killerâs motive.â
âYour second day at rehearsal and itâs just come to you, has it?â Jennifer kidded.
âJennifer, can I borrow Joe for a minute?â Frank asked, having returned and stepping out onto the balcony below them.
Jennifer nodded for Joe to let her take over. âGo on then.â
Frank led Joe through the red velvet curtains and into the lounge on the balcony level. He quickly filled him in about the bank and his encounter with David Young.
âMr. Paul just cashed that check written out to Mr. Kije,â Frank told him.
âCashed it?â Joe asked.
âThe bank teller may be involved,â Frank explained.âShe knew who he was and gave him the money anyway!â
âYou think Mr. Paul is pulling a scam?â Joe wondered.
âThatâs what it looks like,â Frank replied. âWe need to find out if Chris told his father where we were going last night.â
âAnd donât forget Mr. Jeffries,â Joe said.
âRight,â Frank agreed. âIf David Young reported our whereabouts to him, he could have followed us, too. But why would Mr. Jeffries hire an investigator to solve a crime that he was involved in?â
âThen again, what motive could Mr. Paul have?â Joe asked.
Frank shrugged. âMotive is the key to solving this one, Joe.â
âMaybe Mr. Paul and Mr. Kije have a joint account at the bank,â Joe suggested.
âMaybe,â Frank said. âLetâs wait and see what Mr. Paul does with the money.â
âSpeaking of motive,â Joe told Frank. âThere is a reason the star might try to sabotage her own productionâif she was offered a bigger, better show.â Joe then reminded Frank about the phone conversation he had overheard. âShe would have a lawsuit on her hands if she walked away from this show a week before opening,â Joe theorized. âBut if the show were canceled, she wouldnât be breaking her contract.â
âBut could any job offer be big enough to makesomeone with Ms. Andersonâs reputation resort to sabotage?â Frank challenged.
âAll right, cast!â Mr. Paulâs voice rang through the theater. âLetâs run through the show from the top.â
Joe and Frank stepped onto the balcony.
âJoe, I need you back up here,â Jennifer called from the catwalk. âFrank, would you be a love and get me two number forty-seven orange gels from the light storage room?â
âSure, Jennifer,â Frank replied, then trotted down the steps, through the theater, and into the stage left wing.
