âBut . . . he protects everyone,â Alberto said. âHe is

.â
Clint didnât think he was going to get through to the rotund little man.
âDoes he frighten you, Alberto?â
âOh, sÃ, señor,â Alberto said, âbut you must understand, I am a very frightened man.â
âDo I frighten you?â
Alberto hesitated, then said, âSÃ, señor.â
âAlberto,â Clint said, âI am going to pour you a cup of coffee, and then you and I are gonna have a long talk.â
Alberto didnât know what to say to that, so he simply nodded and said, âSÃ, señor.â
TWENTY
âTell me about the sheriff,â Clint said.
âWhat would you like to know, señor?â
âEverything,â Clint said. âEverything that you know about him.â
âI do not understand, señor. Are you and the sheriff not friends?â
âWe are not friends. We only met recently. I need to learn if I can trust him or not.â
Alberto studied Clint for a long moment, then asked, âThis is not a test, señor?â
âNot a test, Alberto. Iâm being truthful.â
Alberto seemed to breathe a sigh of relief that Clint was not friends with Sheriff Vazquez.
âSeñor,â he said, âthe sheriff, he is a bad man.â
âBut heâs the law,â Clint said.
âThat may be,â Alberto said, âbut that does not mean he is a good man. I give him free food because I am afraid of him. And there are many people in town who are also afraid of him.â
âBut why? Whatâs he done to them? Or to you?â
âHe is a deadly man with a pistol, señor,â Alberto said, âand with his fists. I myself have seen him beat a man half to death.â
âFor doing what?â
âFor not showing him the proper respect.â
âWas the man a prisoner?â
âNo, señor, just a citizen of Laguna Niguel.â
âThen why is he allowed to keep his badge?â
âEven the town fathers fear him,â Alberto said. âNo one will try to take his badge.â
âBut in spite of this, does he do his job?â Clint asked. âDo the citizens of Laguna Niguel feel that he can protect them?â
Alberto thought a moment, then said, âI have to admit the answer is yes.â
âIf push comes to shove, can I trust him to watch my back?â Clint asked.
âIâm sorry, what is push and shove?â
âI mean, if anything happens, if thereâs trouble, can I depend on him?â
Again, Alberto took a moment to think about the answer before giving it.
âI think, señor, the sheriff wants something from you,â he said, âso I believe you can trust himâuntil he gets it.â
âThatâs very honest, Alberto,â Clint said. âI appreciate that.â
âSeñor, can I ask you something?â
âSure, go ahead.â
âYou are the Gunsmith, no?â
âI am the Gunsmith, yes,â Clint said.
âPerhaps, señor,â Alberto said, âwhen you and the sheriff have gotten what you need from each other, before you leave Laguna Niguel, you will . . . kill him?â
âI donât know about that, Alberto,â Clint said. âI think if the town is afraid of Vazquez, and you donât want him around, youâre all going to have to get brave and get rid of him yourself.â
âSÃ, señor,â Alberto said. âI understand. But the sheriff does have a powerful friend in town.â
âIs that right?â Clint asked. âWho would that be.â
âDo you know Ernesto Paz?â
âIâve met him,â Clint admitted.
âHe and Vazquez are friends, and Señor Paz puts all his power behind the sheriff.â
âAnd just how much power does Señor Paz have?â Clint asked.
âHe is the most
