year.â
He chuckles. âAnd how them lil honeys lookinâ?â
âMan, slim pickinâs so far. But a lil thing-thing did catch my eye. Man, sheâs stacked in the back real right.â He laughs. Tells me to make sure I keep it strapped up. Reminds me that heâs not beat for grandkids. âDonât worry, Pops. I keeps it wrapped. You already know.â
âYeah, I know how it is. But someâa them fast-behind girls out there will tryâta trap you if you donât keep your mind right.â
âI got you, Pops. Iâm definitely not tryna have kids, man. Iâm still tryna have fun.â
âYeah, well, you just make sure you keep all that fun of yours in a condom.â
I shake my head. Pops be bugginâ hard âbout me gettinâ some chick knocked. He should know that ainât how I get down. No matter how many times I tell âim Iâve never even had sex witâ out a condom, he still ainât tryna hear it. âBy the way,â he continues as I head toward Shaniaâs crib. âYou not still messinâ witâ that lil loudmouthed hoodrat, are you?â Heâs talkinâ âbout Quanda. âI donât want her up in that house, you hear me?â
âI got you, Pops. Nah. I deaded that a minute ago. I thought I told you. But, man, sheâs still sweatinâ the kid, hard, yo. She was all up in school today startinâ, then was out sittinâ on the hood of my whip waitinâ for me this afternoon.â
I can almost see him shakinâ his head at me, lookinâ at me like Iâm mad stupid for not listeninâ to âim in the first place. But Pops ainât gonna ever say it, even if he is thinkinâ it. âYou just make sure you donât let her up in that house,â he warns. âI donât wanna repeat of what happened last summer. You hear me?â
âI got you, Pops,â I say, pullinâ up to Shaniaâs. Sheâs out on her porch witâ her thick, chocolate hips stuffed in a pair of skimpy lil short-shorts. Sheâs rockinâ this low-cut tee that has her boobs practically bustinâ out. She grins, eyeinâ me as I hop outta my whip. Pops and I kick it for a few extra seconds, then I tell âim I gotta bounce.
âYo, wassup, cutie?â I say, walkinâ up on the porch.
She stands up. And the way sheâs lookinâ me up ânâ down lets me know whatâs really poppinâ. Sheâs ready to get that back cracked. âWhat you thinkâs up, boy?â she replies, grabbinâ me by the hand, then pullinâ me toward the door. She tells me her moms wonât be home âtil after ten and her sisterâs at work so she has the spot all to herself. âSo you know what that means, right?â
I smirk, followinâ her into her bedroom. âNah. What it mean, yo?â
She shuts her door, pulls her shirt off, then walks up on me. âIt means you got work to do. And I hope you ready to deliver.â
âYo, I stay ready,â I say, pullinâ her into my arms.

A s horrible as yesterday was being at this dumb school, I only hoped today wouldnât be as miserable. But, considering how the morning popped off, I was doubtful the rest of the day, let alone the rest of the week, would be any better. Last night, when Mariah and I returned from the mall, my mom came into my room, trying to convince me to be more open to âhaving a fresh, new start,â as she called it. And yeah, I rolled my eyes at her. Because the only thing I wanted to know was who was this fresh, new start really for?
âFor both of us,â she had the nerve to say, sitting at the foot of my bed.
âNo,â I huffed. âThis is whatâs best for you, definitely not me. Not once did you ask me what I wanted. And yeah...I know youâre the parent. But this is my life, too, and I shoulda
