suspicious gravity to effect a reconciliation âfor dear old Magnaâ. Bonnie, who was escorted by a wealthy Argentine gentleman, flared up; Ty flared back; the Argentine gentleman resented Tyâs tone; Ty resented the Argentine gentlemanâs tone; the Argentine gentleman pulled Tyâs nose vigorously; and Ty threw the Argentine gentleman over the bartenderâs head into the bar mirror, which did not stand up under the strain. Whereupon Bonnie had Ty arrested for assault. Bailed out in the early hours of Tuesday morning by his father, Ty swore vengeance in the presence of half the newspapermen in Hollywood.
The Tuesday papers made Sam Vix look content. âEven Goldwyn,â he told Ellery modestly, âwould be satisfied with that one.â
But Mr. Vix did not look so content on Friday. The very patch over his eye was quivering when he burst into the Boy Wonderâs office, where Lew and Ellery were shouting at each other in a âstory conferenceâ, while Butcher listened in silence.
âWeâre sunk,â panted Vix. âNever trust an actor. Theyâve done it. Paula Paris just tipped me off!â
âWho done what?â asked Butch sharply.
âThe one thing that blows the Royle-Stuart picture higher than the Rockies. Jack and Blythe have made up!â
He sank into a chair. Lew Bascom, Ellery, goggled at him. Butcher swivelled and stared out his window.
âGo on,â said Lew in a sick voice. âThatâs like saying Trotsky and Stalin were caught playing pinochle with J. P. Morgan.â
âItâs even worse than that,â groaned Vix. â Theyâre going to be married. â
âFor gossakes!â yelled Lew, jumping up. âThat screws everything!â
The Boy Wonder spun around and said into his communicator: âMadge, get Paula Paris on the wire.â
â Requiescat in pace ,â sighed Ellery. âAnybody know the dope on the next train to New York?â
Lew was racing about, declaiming to the ceiling. âWham goes the big idea. Conflict â huh! Feud! Build up a natural for over twenty years and then they go into a clinch and kill the whole thing. They canât do this to me!â
The telephone rang. âPaula, Jacques Butcher. Is it true what Sam Vix says you say about Jack and Blythe?â
âThey agreed to forgive and forget Wednesday night,â answered Paula. âI heard it late yesterday. It seems Jack saw the light Saturday night at the Horseshoe Club after that fuss over Park, the actor, and heâs been brooding over his own cussedness ever since. Seems to be true love, Mr. Butcher. Theyâre rushing plans for the wedding.â
âWhat happened?â
âYour guess is as good as mine.â
âWell, Iâm counting on you to give it a royal send-off in your column, Paula.â
âDonât worry, Mr. Butcher,â cooed Paula. âI shall.â
Lew glared. âIs it on the level?â
And Ellery said: âDid she â did she mention me?â
âYes to you, no to you.â The Boy Wonder sat back comfortably. âNow, boys, whatâs the panic about?â
âIâm dying,â howled Lew, âand he cracks wise!â
âItâs a cinch,â argued the publicity man, âthis marriage knocks the feud for a loop, Butch. Whereâs your publicity build-up now? If they had to get hitched, blast it, why couldnât they wait till the picture was released?â
âLook,â said the producer patiently, getting to his feet and beginning to walk around. âWhatâs our story? The story of four people in a romantic conflict. Jack and Blythe as the central figures. Why?â
âBecause theyâre crazy,â yelled Lew. âThis proves it.â
âBecause, you simpleton, theyâre deeply in love. Youâre doing a love story, gentlemen, although neither of you seems aware of it. They
