asked.
âWe donât have time to think about it now,â Henry said. âWe promised Doris weâd find Hildy.â
They went back outside. Benny and Watch ran around the outside of the cabin looking for some sign of Hildy, but they found nothing.
âMaybe sheâs on her way to the store right now,â Violet suggested. âOr already there.â
âIn that case, weâre wasting our time,â Jessie said. âLetâs go back to camp.â
âNot yet,â Henry said. âI think we should look around a little more.â
âLetâs go to Andyâs,â Benny suggested. âHe might know where Hildy is.â
They ran over the hill, Watch in the lead.
Andyâs place was closed up tight. Even the windows were shuttered.
When the children knocked, there was no answer.
âTheyâre both missing!â Benny said.
CHAPTER 15
The Prisoner
H enry stepped back from Andyâs cabin. âThe way itâs all boarded up, it looks like heâs left for good,â he observed.
They trooped around the side of the cabin. In back, they saw the wheelbarrow leaning against the wall.
âWhatâs that over there?â Benny asked.
âItâs a bale of hay with something on it,â Violet observed.
A square white card was pinned to the bale. Painted on it were several circles, one inside the next.
âItâs a target,â Henry said. âThe kind archers use to practice.â
âBow and arrow practice?â Benny asked.
Jessie knew what he was thinking. âJust because Mr. Watts likes archery doesnât mean heâs the one who put that arrow in the maple tree,â she said.
âThatâs right,â Henry agreed. âSomeone could have taken the arrows from him.â
âMaybe Andy and Hildy are in this together,â Benny said. âMaybe thatâs why theyâre both missing.â
Watch pricked up his ears. He stood listening, and then he loped off toward the cabin.
The children followed him.
âHe heard something,â Jessie said.
Whining softly, Watch scratched at the door.
Henry knocked loudly. âMr. Watts!â he called. âAre you in there?â
When no one answered, Benny put his ear to the door.
âThereâs someone in there,â he whispered. âI can hear something.â
The door opened a crack. Andy Watts peeked out.
âOh, children,â he said. âIâm sorry I didnât hear you.â He yawned. âI was napping.â
âWeâre looking for Hildy,â Henry told him. âHave you seen her?â
âNo, no, canât say that I have,â he answered.
A muffled thump sounded from inside.
Mr. Watts cleared his throat loudly and began coughing.
âIâuhâcanât talk to you right now,â Andy said. âYou run along and Iâll see you later.â
He closed the door but not before they heard someone yell, âHelp! Help! Help me!â
âThatâs Hildyâs voice,â Jessie said.
Henry knocked furiously. âMr. Watts! Whatâs the matter?! Whatâs going on in there?!â
Henry started away from the cabin. âCome on!â he said. âWeâll get the ranger!â
Just then they heard a car approaching.
âItâs coming from over there!â Benny ran toward a thick stand of trees. He dashed through them, the others close at his heels.
Beyond was a dirt road. The children waved frantically at the oncoming truck. It pulled up beside them and stopped.
Doris hopped out. âWhatâs the matter?â she asked.
âHildy,â the children said at once. âSheâs locked in Andyâs cabin!â
Doris leaped out of the truck.
They all ran back the way theyâd come.
Doris pounded on the cabin door. âAndy Watts, come out here this instant!â she demanded. âOr weâre going to break this door
