swim?”
She’d heard he may have been traveling, but no one knew where. Or maybe they were just not sharing his whereabouts. That explained why she hadn’t seen or heard from him the past few days. Happily, that had meant she could concentrate on work.
“Dubai,” Trent replied.
“Business or pleasure?” Drew asked.
“A little of both,” he said.
Pleasure? The thought of him there on pleasure with someone else sent a cold chill through her. She was angry, pissed off, wanted to yell, and throw something at him. Why? She had no right. She’d told him again and again there was nothing between them except a business relationship. He never offered her anything more. Yes, they had sex, wonderful passionate, hot sex a few times. Apparently that was all it was for him if he could so easily go away with another woman. That was just another reason she couldn’t be with him again.
“I thought Lizette would have taught you to relax a bit,” Drew joked.
“We can’t be all as relaxed as you, Drew.”
Elaine had stopped listening to them for a moment and then finally heard Jon say, “Elaine. Hello, can you still hear us?”
“Sorry, I had it on mute.” Great, another lie.
“No problem. Why don’t we get down to business? Elaine, I hope Trent informed you what we are asking you to do for us each month. I know you only started Monday, so we’ll understand if you don’t have anything prepared for today.”
She was more than prepared. “Thank you for this opportunity. I have a PowerPoint presentation prepared and have shared a WebEx link for you to follow along.”
Elaine spent the next twenty minutes discussing the potential donation recipient, the reason why the funds were needed, and exactly how they would be applied over the next twelve months, as well as the long-term benefits. “Do you have any questions or concerns with this choice?”
“I’m impressed. This is exactly what we’re looking for. Trent was right when he recommended you for this position,” Ross said.
Trent recommended me? “Thank you.”
“So are we all in agreement with Elaine’s choice for this month?”
The other three men responded, “Agreed.”
“Elaine, I look forward to seeing what you bring to us next month,” Ross stated.
“So do I. Since you are working closely with Trent, we will leave it to him to finalize the transaction with you,” Jon added.
“I know Trent can be what some would call difficult to work with, so feel free to give me a call if you need to vent or need a shoulder to cry on,” Drew joked.
“Don’t worry, Drew. Elaine and I have a good understanding of each other. Your assistance won’t be needed,” Trent responded in a tone that said he was not amused by Drew’s offer.
Good understanding? Who does he think he is kidding ? Every time she thought she understood him, he either did something or said something to change her mind. Today was just more proof she didn’t understand him at all. And even more proof he didn’t understand her either.
“That sounds like more than just business,” Drew teased.
She needed to change the subject before someone implied or said something closer to the truth. “Thank you for your offer, Drew. I will give you a call if needed. For now I have all the information I need to move forward with the donation, and I will provide you with a follow-up email once the transaction is complete. Have a good day, gentlemen,” she said before she disconnected the call.
Letting out a scream of frustration, Elaine pushed the laptop away, folded her arms on the table, closed her eyes, and laid her head down. How could things be so perfect and so screwed up at the same time? At least she knew Trent wouldn’t be in the office again today since he was in Dubai. Who is he with? Is it the young blonde cheerleader he was with last month or someone new? All she knew was it wasn’t her. Why she wished it was, was beyond her. Time was needed to build her defense against his
