Chapter
Two
That night, Billieâs mum reads her a story in bed. It is about a mummy elephant and her baby. It is Billieâs favourite book.
Suddenly Billieâs mum stops reading. She gets a funny look on her face.
âOh!â she says. âI think the baby is coming!â
She calls to Billieâs dad. Billie climbs out of bed and helps her mum downstairs. Billieâs dad rushes around f inding all the things they will need for hospital.
Suddenly Billie gets a funny feeling in her tummy. âCan I come with you?â she says.
âNo, sweetheart,â says her dad. âRemember, we said that you will stay at Jackâs house when the baby comes.â
âHow long will you be?â asks Billie, feeling worried .
âI donât know, Billie,â says her mum.
She squeezes Billieâs hand. âBut just think â next time you see me, you will have a little baby brother or sister!â
But Billie has decided she doesnât want a silly old baby anymore. She wants her mummy! Billie scrunches up her face and tries not to cry.
âItâs all right, Billie,â says her dad gently.
Jackâs mum comes over to pick up Billie. They watch Billieâs mum and dad drive off.
Billieâs mum blows a kiss but Billie looks down at the ground. She doesnât want them to go without her.
Jackâs mum gives Billie a cuddle. âIâve made a bed for you in Jackâs room,â she says. They walk next door.
Jack is already asleep. His mum tucks Billie into the spare bed.
Jackâs room looks strange in the dark. Billie wishes she was back in her own bed.
Suddenly she sits up.
âMr Fred!â she whispers. âI need Mr Fred!â
âOh dear. Weâll get him tomorrow,â says Jackâs mum.
âHow about you sleep with one of Jackâs toys tonight?â
Jackâs mum gives Billie a big blue teddy bear. He is very soft and cuddly. But heâs not like Mr Fred.
Billie lies in the dark. Her tummy is curling up with worry .
She canât remember where she put Mr Fred!
You remember where he is though, donât you?
Chapter
Three
The next day, Billie has breakfast with Jackâs family. But she doesnât feel very hungry.
Just then there is a knock on the door. Itâs Billieâs dad! âBillie!â he says excitedly. âGuess what? You have a baby brother!â
âA brother?â Billie says, frowning. âBut I wanted a sister! Who will wear all my baby dresses now?â
âOh, Billie,â says her dad, giving her a cuddle.
âYou should see him. Heâs beautiful! And Iâm sure heâll look lovely in your pretty pink dresses.â
Billie giggles. âWhereâs Mum?â she asks. âIs she coming home now?â
âNot yet,â her dad says. âMum has to rest. She will be at the hospital for a few days. But we can go and see her.â
âA few days!â Billie says crossly. âBut I want Mum to come home now.â She stamps her foot.
Billieâs dad sighs.
He thanks Jackâs parents for looking after Billie. Billie and her dad go back home for Billie to get dressed.
Billie feels all jumbled up inside. She is excited to see her new baby brother. But she also feels a teensy bit cross that he is a boy, not a girl.
She is excited to see her mum, but she is also cross that her mum is not coming home yet. All these feelings bubble up inside Billieâs tummy like a milkshake.
Then she remembers.
âMr Fred!â she says. âI have to f ind Mr Fred to give to the new baby!â
âOK,â says her dad. âBut quickly. Mum is waiting for us.â
Billie looks everywhere for Mr Fred. She looks under her bed. No Mr Fred. Then she checks her toy box. Not there either!
She checks all the places Mr Fred could be. But he is nowhere to be found.
âWe have to go now,â Billieâs dad says. âWe
