hand onto one of the shelves in the garage.
As Scott cradled his hand, Mac picked up ahammer and sent it hurling right for Scottâs head.
âLook out!â Glen screamed.
Scott ducked just in time. The hammer missed his head by an inch.
Then Mac picked up a screwdriver and threw itâlike a spearâat Glen.
âHeâs trying to kill us!â Glen screamed. He barely escaped being hit. âLetâs get inside!â
They both ran for the door.
âHurry up!â Scott yelled as Glen struggled with the doorknob. âHurry up!â
Glen finally pushed the door open, and he and Scott rushed into the den.
Scott tried to slam the door behind them. But it wouldnât shut.
Because Mac was pushing on it from the other side.
âHelp me, Glen!â Scott called. He pushed the door with all his might.
Glen threw his weight against the door, too.
But Mac was stronger than both of them combined. Scott and Glen fell on their backs as Mac burst through the door, tore through the den, and disappeared into the house.

âC ome on.â Scott jumped to his feet. âWe have to call the police.â
âAnd tell them what?â Glen demanded. âThat weâve got a giant killer aqua ape running loose in the house? Like theyâre really going to believe that.â
âSo weâll tell them that a burglar broke in or a wild animal or something. Anything to get them over here,â Scott answered.
âThey arenâtââ Glen began.
âMac thinks we tried to crush him with the garage door,â Scott interrupted. âHeâs madâandheâs going to come after us. Iâm calling 9-1-1 right now.â
Scott and Glen rushed to the kitchen phone. Scott started to dial. And then he heard the screams coming from the den.
âScott!â The sound of his motherâs voice was almost more terrifying than anything Mac had done. âYou get in here right this second!â
Scottâs stomach clenched. Now he felt really sick. As he and Glen trudged into the den, Scottâs mind raced to find a way to tell his mother about Mac.
âWhat have you done!â Scottâs mother shrieked at him the moment he stepped into the room.
âMom, I didnât do it,â Scott said. âI swear I didnât.â
Scottâs mother glared at him as she stood holding the shreds of Kellyâs dress. âThen who did?â
âWe grew an aqua ape,â Scott blurted out. âHe got way bigger than the instructions said. Now heâs loose in the house. Heâs destroying everything. And heâs after me and Glen! Youâve got to help us.â
âOh, Scott.â His mother shook her head indisgust. âDo you really expect me to believe that story?â
âMom, please,â Scott begged. âIâm telling the truth. Right, Glen?â
Glen nodded his head, looking terrified.
âI donât want to hear one more word of this nonsense,â Scottâs mother yelled. She was angrier than Scott had ever seen her. She threw the ruined dress onto the couch.
âI hate you!â Kelly screamed at Scott. âI hate you both!â Then she burst into tears.
âDonât cry, Kelly,â her mother said soothingly. She gently stroked Kellyâs hairâwell, what was left of itâas she glared at Scott. âItâs okay.â
âItâs not okay!â Kelly wailed. âMy dress is ruined! Now I canât go to the dance!â
âWeâre just going to have to go out and buy the dress in the mall,â her mother said. âAnd you, young man, are going to pay for it,â she said to Scott. âOut of your allowance. Even if it takes the rest of your life!â
Scott stood silent.
âIn fact,â his mother continued, âKelly and I are going to go out right now to get it. I will deal with you and this mess when I get
